: Impressions on a modded Spec-V!!!

Hello everyone!

My buddy let me take out his (lightly)modded blue 02 spec-V last night. He has ground controls, Injen intake, and a stromung exhaust. I was very impressed. First gear was worthless, if the 17's werent on the car the tires would have spun like a turbo car. The car handled great and the power up top was pretty impressive! just my $.02 ! Have a good one!

I m still amazed at the torque the QR has. I really want to start down the road of mods soon on my Spec V but I got to get a few things straight with the dealership.
The Spec V really has a good starting point as far as potential.

what exactly are you getting straight?

I just can't deal with that redline. I was thinking about buying one, but after banging the rev limiter about 6 times on the test drive I wouldn't buy one til an ECU is available.

ECU won't matter a damn. It will never breath well at higher rpms like the SR20.

Same prob. I drove one the other day and hit redline within 2 seconds in first every time I gunned it. Anyone know what the 350Z redline is?:D

From pictures, I believe the 350Z redline is 6500. But with a V6 like that, you don't need to wind it out. Its power its in the midrange.

i tend to agree, if you look at automotive history... torque monsters tend to have lower redlines. PLUS, 2.5L is a big engine for a inline four. Usually buillders switch to a V6 at that point. bigger pistons don't work well with redlines.

My beef w/ the QR motor is that its a 'stroker' motor w/ a open deck design. Translation: not much boost possibilities.

I was reading a post on the b15sentra board, and they have a 'turbo' kit for the new QR for $5200, and they claim 250 or so to the front wheels. But their $3400 SR20 turbo claims 350 to the front... which one would I choose? hmmm, its kinda obvious.

I'm sure it'll make a great all-motor candidate... but sadly, these days all-motor 4 cylinder cars aren't fast what so ever. Even if they are running mid 13s.

My beef with the QR is that it is a weak engine. Period. Everything about it, it's internals, the trany, all need to be re-worked to have a reputable motor. I think that, if you own one, you should gut it, and entirely rebuild it. Everything from the soft valve springs to the spongy shifter feel to the weak conrods. I'm not downing on the Spec-V owners, I just hoped that Nissan would throw in, maybe, a DET. But that never happened. I guess that the QR just needs time to mature to the state of the SR20.

true the QR is a new engine. and a first year car always has bugs, just like software. give it a few years, maybe they will upgrade if there is enough feedback to do so.

The difference is the SR was great from the start.

The 2003 is supposed to have a longer 1st and 2nd gear.

wow, is that a sleeper i'm reading about at FreshAlloy.com or what? a few mods in that LE would bring that up to Spec V standards. it will catch a few hondas by surprise for sure.

is that the GXE your talking about.. if it is id imagine the gxe LE will be a decent buy for a 2.5 luxury small sedan. hope fully they remove the auto from the SE-R if they do this..

as Far as the strength is concerned i cant wait to see how well these engines fair at closer to 50k and 100k... but plain and simple .. if i owned a spec V .. it would be dead by now... ive got 50000 miles on my 01 SE Ive got clatter( i know why now friggen dealers)... thats it.. not bad for a daily romped SR, gotta get a better redline though..

::::Edit i should stop drinking at work.. should be easier to read::::
