I need a good heater for my garage...working on my car in negative temperatures has got to go.

Anyone have good experiences with any? Whats the fuel, pricetag, and fuel consumption? I guess size would be nice too, but my garage is flexible. I've been looking at propane heaters, about $180 but chew a gallon per hour...:( Is there anything better out there?

For the last couple of seasons I have been using this:

Mine looks a bit different from that one as I have an older model. It has low-medium-high settings (30k-40k-50k BTU). I use mine with a slightly larger 30lb tank and I'm able to work through the winter and not have to fill it, although lately I've only been in the garage a few times a month with the heat on. I have found the key is to crank it on high for 20-30 mins and then drop it down to low to maintain a comfy temp. My garage is detatched and uninsulated and even with the door cracked I am comfortable in a sweatshirt. Leave it on high the whole time and it's tee shirt weather in there. :)

The only drawback is noise. It is a bit loud with the fan and rocket engine sound. If it's not too cold out (well below freezing) you can keep the garage door open a bit more and leave the heater further outside, blowing in. That helps keep the noise down.

I would check out used tool stores. I got mine for $80 at such a store. I got the plain 30lb OEM propane tank at the hardware store. I have found the standard propane refills from a local gas company to be cleaner burning (less smell) than the Blue Rhino or Amerigas 20lb cylinders.

Edit: This is heating a 32' x 32' uninsulated detatched garage (2 car).
