looks like the front side of the cat is wearing down a little, would it be ok to run it backwards(a cheap way to extend the life)?

Since the exhaust has to run the complete length of the catalytic no matter what orientation it is in, I don't think reversing it would do any good.

How can you tell it is wearing down? If the honeycomb is coming apart, just replace it.
