I was sitting at the airport parked today, motor running, and all of a sudden the idle divebombs to about 300-500 and the car starts running really shitty, then dies. It starts and runs REALLY shitty, shaking the whole car and wanting to stall. Runs jsut like when the MAF came loose when I had a CAI and the car was ingesting unmetered air. When i got home i was trying to diagnose it, and when i unplug the MAF, the car runs 1000 times better, with the exception of some jerking and the 2500rpm rev limiter. I limped over to my friends house and swapped the working MAF from his classic onto mine, and it still does the same thing, so all I can think of is maybe the wiring to the MAF. Anyone have any ideas? This is my only car, It NEEDS to run.

Thanks
Parker

Re-check your MAF ground, maybe re-ground it to that little male end that is bolted to the distributor. Hope you get it figured out dude.

Parker--

Funny you should say this. Long story short...I had a MAF wire (the metal clip on the end, actually) wiggle loose on me about 3 years ago. I soldered it up as best I could, and the car ran fine.

Last week while installing my clutch, we hit the plug at the MAF and apparently broke the solder/screwed up the tentative connection.

Luckily, eric96ser and Thomas Reynolds were soldering pros and cleaned up my monkeyness.

The car ran *exactly* as you just described above when we first fired her up.

Solution? Pull the clip out of the MAF and see if all the metal connectors on the ends of the wires are protruding enough to make contact on the other side. If not, you've got some soldering to do.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

Another thought. Check to see that all 4 fuel injectors are working properly. The monkey ass way to test this is

1. start car
2. pull plug wire one, see if engine runs any different
3. if engine runs worse, put plug wire back on and move on to next plug wire

If you pull a plug wire off and nothing happens, meaning the car doesn't run any worse than it already is, then that would be the bad injector. Replace it.

Good luck!

NismoPC-

Your test could also show a bad spark plug or bad spark plug wire as well. That wouldn't simply mean a bad fuel injector, so don't treat that test as a fuel injector-only test. It's more of a cylinder test per se.

well, all the connections to the MAF appear to be in good shape, as is the reground(under the intake mani.) the pulling the wire test shows no signs of a bad cylinder, as they all make the car run even worse. Pulling the plugs show that the car is running FILTHY rich, they are all black and sooty........ I am totally stumped, I have a guy thats supposed to come out to the house tomorrow who works on nissans, maybe he will be able to help.

If the plugs are sooty, then you most likely have a leak in the IC piping somewhere between the turbo and the throttle body. Triple check all IC piping connections and all vacuum lines coming off of them.

This isn't the turbo forum? Oh, guess not... :D

I notice you said the connections "appeared" to be in good shape. Test them with a mutlimeter. Just because they "look" good doesn't mean they are, unless you have supervision and can see the electrons flowing like they should. :)

chock one up for "How THE **** did i not see that" the nissan tech came by, and im embarrassed to say what the problem was. I'll just say that it involves a GAPING hole in the intake tube and a conspicuously absent gatorade cap:rolleyes:   not sure how i didnt see that one. runs perfectly now

did you purchase fuel right before the problem started? Long shot but figgered i'd throw it out there. I'm leaning towards the maf ground though.
