: 1st Gear Syncro?

Over the past few days, it seems there is something wrong with my First gear syncro. It has been grinding when I put it into first when I'm going into a slow 5 MPH roll. It has done it about half a dozen times now. I tried adjusting my clutch, thinking maybe it was engaging too low. Now the engagement point is perfect, but the problem is still occuring. Today, I was at a complete stop at a light and pushed the clutch all the way in and put the shifter into 1st gear. Too my dismay it made a grinding noise as it went into gear. Does this sound like my syncro is on its last legs? New transmission fluid was put in about 2 weeks ago, because the driver's side axle seal was changed. Could this have anything to do with it? All my other gears are extremely smooth. This is the first transmission related problem I've EVER had with the car and it's especially upsetting because I am looking to sell my car in a few months. :( TIA guys.

what cluth do you have in you car? i have a 98 se with an act in it and have to get it warrentied. i am having the same trouble with mine i have only had the clutch in for about 6 months. i have a guy that knows exactly what is wrong.. he said that it is in the springs and pressure plate that is makin that do what it is.. just do not forse it into first. when at a stop go from 2 to first and it will go in smoother that straight to first.. but better on the car.. try that and have someone with clutch expereience look at it..

you may also notice the clutch getting hot and when you take the rpms up when you have been driving it in hot weather on a hot day it will grab funky... but mine only grabs funky over 5500 rpms when warm, but when cold it runs great. hope this was some help at least to get you by.

My clutch acts a little funky when its hot too. Nothing bad but it actually grinds in reverse sometimes. I also noticed it grabs weird above 4000 rpms at times...but very infrequently. Its barely noticable but I have noticed any clutch issues come when it is over 85 degrees out. I think cars just run crappier in the heat. Esp. with A/C on.

Thanks for the reply, Slick. I have a stock clutch in my car. It was replaced about 10,000 miles ago and it still grips like new. Thanks for the advice about putting it into second and then into first. I will give that a try so I don't potentially damage anything further.

Yeah, I feel like I'm driving a totally different car when it's really hot and humid out and the A/C is on. At least that's normal though. Engines don't like humid air. :(

yo know whats funny...my buddies crank walking talon turbo is always having problems getting it into first...he did that second to first shift thing too that was previosly recommended and it worked well. However, once he changed to redline tranny fluid and adjusted his clutch he never had that problem again. Go figure.

IIRC there is no synchro on first. your not supposed to be able to put it in while moving to fast. If you want first while moving you need to heel toe, match the revs and then put the shifter in first. There is one turn at my local autox that everyone debates if they want to use first or second. 2nd is usually faster because of time wasted trying to match revs and then once you do since you start out around in the turn at 28mph you have to go to second again. some times pointless. first goes so fast sometimes its better to leaveit in 2nd.

most modern gearboxes have a syncroed first to allow for rolling starts. Hell my 1975 Triumph TR6 with a 4 speed gearbox has a syncro first.

But my old 67 MGB didnt.

So you had to be at a dead stop or double clutch it into first.

But as for the sentra, you should be able to dump it in first at really low speeds without much effort, towards the end of the gearing though, you probably need to rev match.

I talked with my room mate last night about the gear things and he said that he was talking with some one in the z club in kc and he said that the z, maxima, sentra all are syncro the same 1st and reverse on there oun and 2nd - 5th on one.. But Chris93SER
you may check into thing if it gets worse the clutch may have week springs i know that if it is carquest or another company like that they have a 1 year warrenty just check into it and let me know what you find out.. even in hot hot weather it should not act as weird as ours does at high rpms when warm. it will act a little funny. i will check into is more as well..

Slick,
My replacement clutch is a Napa. I highly doubt there is anything wrong with the springs. I've had it in for well over a year and it has never given me any trouble. My clutch works fine whether it is cold or warm out. I just have a feeling my 1st gear syncro is a little worn or I may just need to add some more tranny fluid. Since I first started this thread, it seems to have gotten better for some odd reason. Who knows. As long as it stays the way it is now, I'm happy. I'll just learn to deal with the occasional grind. :) Thanks again for the replies. I appreciate it.
