Interesting results to the poll thus far. To me it's just as fast. And that's not because the server is right next to me- the DSL line that is used for my internet connection is done by a completely different DSL company than the one the forums is listed on, so there are plenty of hops between my connection and the server's connection. Although those are pretty quick hops I must say...

Anyways, I believe we are going to upgrade the processor in the server from a single PIII-450 to dual PIII-1GHz processors very soon. We did some benchmarking last night and the CPU was running 40%-60% all last evening which is pretty high IMO. I'll let everyone know ahead of time when this will happen and when I plan to perform the upgrade because the box will have to be down during that time.

This is my 3rd attempt and every time I try I get this message:

What does that mean? If it is implying I'm not logged in, I just posted a second ago.

The ping times are a little high. I'd say the overall response time is a little slower than before, maybe 20%, but it's perectly acceptable and not objectionable. Could it be faster? Yes. Does it really matter? No, it's fine.

Here's my results from home on a cable connection through a Linksys Router.

When you're on dial-up, you can watch. Things. Load.

I don't think it's bad at all with the 50 people browsing the boards right now.

Jim- do you mean that dialup is slow in general before and after on this site, or that with dialup the forum is slower than before?

I connect pretty consistantly at 46.6-50.3k through my dial-up. Nothing loads especially fast, but these forums are quick by my own yardstick.

I haven't noticed any slowdown from before.

They are a little bit slower. Not as bad as before. But I sure as hell am not going to complain. Good job Ben! Thank you.

MUCH faster for me... go figure.

Actually, I noticed that the limiting factor in the speed of these forums is not the network, but the server itself.

Sometimes the board is blazing fast, and sometimes it's slow. The key point is that when it is slow, it is during post lookups. You may want to look at optimizing the SQL db driving this forum Ben if you are really interested in improving performance. I seriously doubt that the network has anything to do with the speed of the boards at this point.

FWIW, I think the boards perform just fine. It is only slow during predictably high trafficked hours.
