I was told by a friend to advance the timing on my 96 se-r to 17. Is this correct? and why?

just curious... any significant gains?

thanks

THATS RIGHT BILL ADVANCING UR TIMING GIVES U ABOUT 5-7HP TO THE WHEELS BUT IF U ADVANCE UR TIMING MAKE SURE U ONLY USE 91 OCTANE.THIS CAN ALSO CAUSE UR SR20 TO RUN ALITTLE HOTTER

I thought advancing the timing to 19 or higher would recommend 91 octane.. am i right? can u use reg or mid grade gas if you advance ur timing to 17?
and also to do this, you just need adjustable cam gears?
thanks

why would you have to run 91 octane if you advance the timing so little... what is the stock timing set at?

Well, 17 is the high end of the Nissan Spec, so you should be able to run 87 pee at this setting. Procedure is at

http://www.se-r.net/engine/about_timing.html

Depending on where you timing was, you can gain a couple of hp. Not much, but it's free, so why not?

You WILL feel the difference. My SE-L has 17* and the free mod was well worth it http://directgalaxy.com/images/forum/thumbsup.gif

A b14 won't let you down yeye :-D Since its kind of hard to find a 200sx se-r and in good condition with low miles, I would say get what ever drops in your lap. Let the hunt begin, call me up whenever you find any nice se-r's for sale so we can go and take a look at themhttp://www.directgalaxy.com/images/forum/thumbsup.gif

I got a cheapo light for ~35.00 at Pep-boys. And I can use it to bump timing up when I am running 100 oct + at the track or where ever, its home is in my trunk bag:)

myself and Chris storer were talking about timing, and we came to the question, how do you read the marks. i have never timed a car, so i dont know. i have a BBdet, and i want to run 15 advanced.
