Hey guys,

Been a while since I've been on here, but I've been having a problem with my car lately and figured I'd see if I could get any input on here. I searched first but couldn't really find the information I'm looking for.

Here's the deal:
I was on the highway last week and noticed the steering wheel was grabbing to the right off and on, not a pull like the alignment was off, but a quick grab where the steering wheel turned right then adjusted back to normal. At first my car would only do this over bumps in the road, like seams on bridges, but last week started doing it on flat ground, too. Once I got home, I noticed that when I turned around corners, I would hear a loud clicking coming from the driver side wheel well.

I took it to a shop around here where the mechanic put the car up on the lift and he called back and said the problem is a torn boot on the drivers side axle and that he would have to send the axle away to get rebuilt to fix it.

I know a little bit about this- I put a used NA JDM engine and rebuilt tranny into the car with my dad as my senior project in high school, but it's been awhile since I got under there.

IIRC, one side of the axle was harder to get into one hub than the other- can anyone clarify my memory regarding this question?

Any input about my situation would be greatly appreciated. Not sure what I'm going to do right now as I'm not too excited to get under there and fix this myself, but I don't really wanna pay this guy $350 (his quote) to do it either. I know I can get a rebuilt driver side axle from Advance Auto for $70. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

if your boot is torn you will need to replace it. doing it with parts from say advance auto parts, etc is a cheap way to go if you dont drive the car hard. i would suggest getting a set of axles from raxles or the driveshaft shop. the drivers side is definately the harder side to remove and replace simply because there is a C-clip on the input shaft that holds the axle in the tranny. make sure you leave teh nut flush on the axle when you install it and hit it with a RUBBER mallet not a hammer (i learned from experience lol)
basically, its a time consuming procedure at most, but once you are under there its honestly not all that hard. For removal, get a big prybar and shove it on the inside part of the input shaft. make sure you have a good amount of room to force the prybar or hit it with a mallet. once you hit it hard enough to loosen the C-clip you'll know. best of luck to you!

Get a brand new GSP brand axle from rockauto. It's cheap and there is no core charge. Rebuilds are usually crap.

I just grabbed two perfect axles from the local "they" pull yard. for 25 dollars each. They were OEM from a b14. The driver side is usually harder to pull out but if you have taken them out before on your first swap they shouldn't be that hard to pull out.

I was under a car once that had its OEM axles from 15 years ago... and for some reason the passenger side was a BITCH to get out... it had like ceized in there. THe driver side of that car was cake though.

Just bring a tie rod fork tool and a mallet... a couple swear words and bring some hulk rage when the times get tough. You should be good.
