They are on the crank pulley, not the distributor.

ACK!

Go to www.se-r.net for the procedures. Or get a FSM or Chilton's or Hayne's.

Steve,
I was confused as well. . . The only car I had ever manually set the timing on before was my old 74 Beetle. The timing marks on that were on the face of the crank pulley, so that's where I looked when I went to do it on the SE-R. However, the marks are on the edge of the crank pulley, and the arrow/pointer is above the pulley. You can get a peek at it from above the passenger side(front) of the engine. Just point the timing light down there and look for the pointer and timing marks.

Also, I had to rotate the whole distributor, not just the cap. My timing was set at 9-10deg, now I've got it bang-on at 17deg. I'm looking forward to driving the car to see how much of a difference it makes. :D Overall the process was much simpler than I had imagined, especially once you find the timing marks. ;)

so, basically what i do is:
check the initial timing
loosen distributor bolts
turn distributor until desired timing
tighten bolts

of course this isnt including setting the ecu for timing mode........

These steps work rather well.

Where is the arrow pointer that you guage your timing by? I found one white mark on my UR pulley. Now I just need to know what to line it up against. I saw something that was about 2 or 3 cm wide that looked like it could have been a pointer (and it was above the crank pulley). It was just sittin' by itself which confused me because I figured something like that would be more clearly displayed.

Does the pointer look like the end of a sharpened pencil?

purist,
yes, it looks like a mini sharpened pencil probably 1/8th of an inch thick or so, pointing from driver's side to passenger side. if you look straight from the top of the engine compartment down to the crank pulley, you won't miss it.
