Well I finally got it fixed it wasn't cheap but it's done and works just fine. Some friends used it on a 2100 mile road trip this past weekend to go get a 350 shortblock for his Camaro and it ran flawless. I must say it's nice to have 5th again. :D

Cruising at 80 they said were averaging about 30-33MPG

what did it cost you? i am looking to get mine repaired, but i think fixing it is out of the question, I'm probably just going to get a 95-97 tranny..

I agree with you Rob. I think instead of getting it fixed I'm just going to get a newer tranny and pray that fifth gear holds up. I am curious though about how much it would cost to replace all the necessary parts.

The parts cost me 330 and the tranny work was 350 so all together it was around 700. The trannies in these cars are hard to find I called about 15 junkyards with no luck at all. So I opted to fix mine and so far everything is fine it even went on a 2300 mile trip to Florida and back already.

He said all my other gears and synchros were fine inside the tranny so I'm not worried at all that it will not hold up for another 200K. :)

SE-R.NET 5th-gear popout article (http://www.se-r-list.org/fifth.gear.phtml)

I posted this just minutes ago on the NissanForums.

For you guys thinking about replacement trannies, '91-'92 5-speed used cable speedometer, all since use electric sender. Be careful when selecting your replacement.

I just had problems going into my 5th and reverse gears, the problem was that it wouldnt. So, instead of taking my tranny off and having it rebuilt or fixed, which would have been expensive im sure, just like ur saying about the 5th gear pop out, i was blessed to find a 95 se-r tranny which me and my boy chris (nismoser) installed last night. The tranny cost me 450, so i guess that was a cheaper route for me to take. Im sure if you can find one, then its a better bet. Oh, and about the 91-94's having a speedo cable, that is true. The 95-97 have a speed sensor instead. All you have to do is swap them out. They are the same size base, so its an even swap. Then just run your cable through the sheeth just like on your old tranny and you will be good to go.

Minor correction: 1991-1992 had the speedo cable, not 1991-1994.

Congrats!!!

I just buying a new tarnny as well though.
But no time soon. Its not so bad living with no 5th.
You can still spank GS-Rs in the 1/4 mile and thats all that matters.

Instead of fixing the 5th gear popout, I just picked up a new tranny out of a '95 for $400 and swapped out clutch, flywheel , and Motor mounts while I was at it. Took a couple of days as I couldn't locate the all of the 15 bolts that have to be removed, but the swap was well worth it as the new tranny only had 33K on it. Still no speedo though as the connector is a little different, though they looked similar. Think I'll just crawl under someone elses 200 and steal the the connector plug. Would only take 20 seconds. O wait ministers shouldn't do those types of things!

Well like I said I coud not find a replacement tranny upon callin numerous junk yards so I opted to have it fixed. Sure it wasn't cheap but if the rest of the tranny is in good sahpe I see no issues with it.

This car is NOT raced or driven HARD ever. It is my DD and beater and I need it reliable so I don't beat on it much.
