i was wondering if i could pull my crank in my sr20det rwd 240sx with the engine in and trans off? i spun a rod bearing and i have an apexi head gasket i want to save. i will machine the rod journals and get new pistons/rods if the bores are good.

are the journals scoured, most of the time if the bearing just spun and you didnt run it long you can usually just replace the bearings and be done unless there is some wear on the rod journals. i would say save the hastle and remove the engine, you have the steering crossmember in the way and i believe thats where your engine mounts bolt to also. so you would have no way of holding the motor up unless you had a engine lift.

i dont know yet but i just saw a picture of the block and the pistons wont clear the main bearing journals to take them out from the bottom but maybe i will try that i just thought maybe that would be an alternative

No, you can't. The reason is because you need to remove the flywheel, and to do that you have to remove the tranny, which means to remove the engine to do it properly. Sorry but nissan's gods hates you :(

Good Luck anyway

I've hung I don't know how many engines from a 4x4 across the fender sills to take the underside apart. If that's the only reason there's not much trying going on.

I'll assume you mean you will get new p/r's if the bores aren't good? If not then you have to pull the head to replace the pistons anyway. On every(probably close to 100) water cooled engines I've been into they have to come out the top. You should bite the bullet and pull it to have that rod checked good if it's spun bad. The rod can be bent and often the crank will wear on the rod meaning it's toast anyway.

 What are you talking about? In a FWD car its damn near impossible to remove the crank with the motor in the car. Its possible, but its more trouble then its worth. How do I know this? Because I just swapped my crank out about 2 monthes ago.
With a RWD SR20 its much easier because you have the oil pump and pullies and all that sitting in the front of the car as oppose to the side where you cant get to the pullies.
Honestly either way id pull the motor out and throw it on a stand to do the work. Having it on the stand made everything so much easier. It also makes it so that you can get the old gasket material off the motor without having to worry much about it getting into the motor. That and the fact that the crank in these SR20's is not light at all so trying to hold it in place (with motor in the car) and bolt it down at the same time will prove to be a major pain in the ass
