Hi, new to the forum.. doing a sr20de+t swap into my ae86.

problems i am having at the moment. RWD DET were hard to find and pretty pricey, So i got a rwd DE and am going to boost it . the problem is that the power steering pump is bad, so i needed to know if anyone knows the compatibility between fwd DE or DET pumps with the RWD layout. also the alternator bracket is missing and again curious if anyone knows if the fwd one could work (i suspect i will have no luck with this )

little background info. i am in Costa Rica, sr20de engines are a dime a dozen here. parts can be found ANYWHERE. and the fwd DET is getting pretty common. but the RWD det is hard find and the RWD de is really really hard to find (i imagine *** there are not many 240 guys looking to buy an NA engine to swap)

Any help would be greatly appreciated since am getting to know more about this engine (apart from specs and tuning which i already have gotten to learn quite a bit, now am getting to the little details you only learn when you own the engine :) )

No the alternator on the rwd motor sits in the back side of the motor, the bracket is different, same goes with the power steering pump, bracket is different and sits in a totally different spot than the rwd ones. you will have to get the rwd brackets. as far as the pumps being the same i believe they are similar if not the same pump, just mounted in a different location on the motor. Sorry and good luck finding those parts....I can get them here easily, rwd motors are super cheap and easy to find here in the states.

thanks, fortunately i do have the PS pump bracket, and the bracket for the alternator i have a source where i may be able toget it relatively cheap.

one thing i forgot to ask just to confirm, the mechanic said he is nearly sure... but. you happen to know if the alternators are the same for FWD and RWD? because the place i bought the engine from will give me an alternator from FWD without problem since i was supposed to be receiving a complete engine (same goes for the PS pump thats why i am checking before going and making a deal with them)

once again i think they are similar or the same. i know there was a guy who relocated his alternator on his fwd to where it sits on a rwd motor by using the rwd bracket. of course he didnt have power steering, neither do i but that would help because it uses just one belt instead of two being it wraps around the water pump and alternator on the rwd motors. i was thinking of doing it on mine, but i would have had to find the rwd bracket. might eventually do it later to clear some room in the front of the bay.

not sure about power steering pumps. however i do know they make differant ratio pinions for the manual steering rack some ae86's had. i would go with that.

Thanks for the help and info i will let you guys know how it goes when i confirm the compatibility between these parts, makes it easier when shopping for these things later on.

Oh there is also the possibility of going without power steering but am wondering how much it would affect. the steering felt really heavy one time when the belt that drives the pump on my old 4age popped. was not much fun driving it at low speeds.

you guys feel it was worth not having power steering in terms of whatever weight you may have saved and also less power loss??

just wanted to come back and confirm yes the power steering pumps are EXACTLY the same the only thing that was different was the little fitting that conencts to the bottom of it that has a hose. but even that was really similar.

no confirmation yet on if the anlternator will work, i will have the RWD bracket this weekend and be able to test fit the alternator from a fwd to see. but am willing to bet its the same :)
