It happens. There is a gasket between the valve cover and the spark plug cylinders. Buy the spark plug gaskets and a valve cover gasket and you should be good.

on a scale of 1 to 10 what would u rate the removal of the valve cover at (1being "simlpe",10 being "hard as hell")

.5 It is a snap...just undo ALL of the VC bolts (nuts). BTW there is one in the middle of the VC.

It is easy. When you take of the nuts be careful and take off the washers under them. When you pop the valve cover loose those things will fly off everywhere. I learned the hard way. When you take off the valve cover, you will see how the gasket "sits" on the valve cover. Make sure the gasket is in place on the cover when you put the cover back on. Do not over tighten the nuts when you put it back on, they WILL break off. Just use a 1/4 ratchet and 10mm socket to do it and tighten it with one hand. It is easy.

Yeah it shouldn't even be rated, but like they said be carefull the studs will break(I have broke 6 already) and make sure you take the one in the middle off. Oh and just pull the hoses on the breather off.

you can also use a lil dab of RTV on the gasket around the straight parts to help hold it in place..works good.you will need black RTV to seal the half circle areas for the cams...I used just a few little spots..like spot welding if you will.holds it in place and it doesnt move around..

kinda like that...

the gasket part numbers are....

outer cover rocker 13270-53J05 order 1
inner spark plug rckr 13271-53J02 order 4

www.nissanparts.cc has them for $8.57 and $1.32pc.plus shipping..local might be cheaper.

Piece of cake. I'm doing mine this weekend. However, I would follow the tightening order shown in the FSM just to make sure that the V/C doesn't get warped during the process. Then, it would probably leak worse than before the gasket replacement.

Good luck...

Can I just say from experience I broke 2 VC bolts, so order some along with your gasket, because I swear on my car you will break one at some point. My dumbass dealership took 3 weeks to get them, they are stupid. Order about 20 thousand and you should be good! :D Make it just tight enough to where you feel the slightest resitance...at that point its already too tight!

Is it required to clean off the old gasket sealer. (the glue) Or am I thinking of a different seal? I'm thinking about going ahead and replacing mine before I sell the car.

Just clean all the old sealant off. Some in front of the cam gears, the distributor, and next to the distributor. Tighten it to I think 30 lbs. per inch. Pipe up if I am wrong.

I checked with my fsm for the 93 nx2000 and it's 2.9 Ft Lb (4 nm) first then 5.8-7.2 Ft Lb (8-10 Nm)

I also Checked with my 98 fsm and it says the same 69-87 In-Lb.

My chiltons for both says the same also.

Sounds right to me, I remember it was some minute number, as compared to the torque spec. for the bolt on the cam, like 130ft. lb. LOL! That was a bitch, for real. Just use your head when tightening them, do them all a little, and then go back over them making it slightly tighter. Yes, clean off all the old RTV sealant and replace it with new RTV. Try not to let it get into the head, though.

Not to bring back a dead subject, but what can be used to easily and cleanly remove the old RTV? Is there any certain trick to removing it, or is it just make sure nothing falls in? I hope to be working on this Thursday amongst other various things.

The stuff just peels off easily. You can put a sheet of plastic over the valve train and that should stop any debris from entering you head.
Good luck!

Dude its easier than you are thinking. All you have to do is get like a flathead screwdriver and no sweat. I put a towel over my valve train. A little bit of stuff got in, but its not that deep so I just got loose RTV out with pliers. No sweat.

If you find some stubborn spots, mineral spirits will remove it.

Be sure to get all the mineral spirits off, or the new RTV will not cure.

Sounds easy enough. I'm just trying to make sure I am prepared for whatever. Now I just need thursday to roll around to get my paycheck...

What are you going to be doing that requires you to remove that valve cover?
