: Wierd Fuel Pump Problem
siastbill1 04-12-2008, 01:26 PM Hey, got a 91 NX 2000, and the fuel pump went on it. I had a buddy put a new one in, but now the car "runs out of gas" at around a quarter of a tank. I initially thought it might be the fuel sending unit being wrong, but I checked the mileage over several tanks of gas, and it is indeed running out with substantially fewer miles per tank of gas (again, it's like there is a quarter tank of gas that isn't being used).
Is there a hose that goes from the fuel pump into the tank that may not have been long enough... or something to that effect? I am willing to open if up as long as I know what to look for.
Thanks in advance!

gEE805 04-12-2008, 01:48 PM maybe he didnt put the fuel pump in right cause this shouldnt be happening.... So your saying the fuel pump doesnt have the lil filter/screen on it?
Nx2k GTi-R 04-12-2008, 01:50 PM yea there is a bag thats is supposed to sit on the bottom of the tank.. its a filter type bag - you should have gotten a new one with your pump...
Nx2k GTi-R 04-12-2008, 01:57 PM whoops
siastbill1 04-12-2008, 08:02 PM Hmm, I know there was a bag type filter that came with it, but it's entirely possible that he didn't put it on (or it wasn't secured properly) when he put the pump in. I'll have to crack it open and have a look.
If there is a bag on the pump, is there any chance it might not actually reach the bottom of the tank? It's not an official Nissan pump, but it is supposed to be a direct OEM replacement.
I'll let you know what I find.
gEE805 04-12-2008, 08:28 PM its possible or he installed it in some weird way upside down....also jsut for safety purposes....make sure no lines have any kinda lil leak....good luck
siastbill1 04-28-2008, 03:23 AM Ok, finally got around to taking apart the fuel pump, and the filter bag was on there. Now I'm really stumped. I can post a pic of the fuel pump, but I'm not sure if this makes a difference or not.
Anyone got any other ideas?
Matt - NX2K 05-01-2008, 12:55 AM so i put a new pump in budgetnx's car and his car according to the gauge runs out a 1/4 or a bit below. it kinda drops then just pegs out. what im pretty sure happened with his is that when i was putting it back in, the resistor for the sending unit caught on something or something caught on it and it bent the lever arm away from the resistor itself. so when the gas level lowers, the float moves the lever to a postion where it no longer touches the resistor (as to the arm being bent) and it pegs the gauge low.
hopefully this is kinda what you are describing
budgetNX 05-01-2008, 12:57 AM *COUGH* *COUGH* *COUGH*
can i be any more obvious matt?
NismoSER 05-01-2008, 07:08 AM Check the fuel return line. Its supposed to be attached to the underside of the fuel pump cradle. Obviously, it shoots fuel back right at that little "bag" that you refer to, otherwise known as an in-tank fuel filter.
I had this same issue on my SE-R for months and nobody on here could figure it out. Search my username for posts referring to it if you like! Good luck.
siastbill1 05-06-2008, 10:39 AM Wow NismoSER, I looked through your earlier postings and I have to say that every issue that you've had is word-for-word identical to the problems I am experiencing. If I listen, I can even hear the gurgling you described when the pump is priming!
I guess I'll have to crack her back open and make sure the hose you mentioned is attached to the cradle. Any suggestions on what to look for?

NismoSER's analysis will probably solve your problem. The in-tank return line just inserts into the bottom of the fuel pump plastic housing, as he said. I had the exact same symptoms, and it actually hindered me from firing up my project car recently. Once I fixed it, I can get below a quarter tank with no driveability issues.
NismoSER 05-06-2008, 12:19 PM Hope it helps you!!
siastbill1 05-08-2008, 11:12 PM Well, took it apart and found that the fuel return hose was nicely attached :(
Does anyone have any other ideas. Maybe the fuel regulator isn't properly returning the fuel or something?
NismoSER 05-09-2008, 08:39 AM Just to clarify, you checked the *hard line* that is inserted beneath the fuel pump cradle, correct? Not the rubber lines that connect to the fuel sender...
What kind of FPR do you have, is it OEM or aftermarket? What kind of fuel pump did you install? Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?
Lastly, I would check to see if that fuel return line is clogged where it shoots back into the tank. Happened to a buddy's NX, and was doing wacky things with the fuel pressure.
siastbill1 05-09-2008, 04:04 PM Hey, yah I checked to make sure that the fuel return hose was attached to the metal line that is under the fuel pump cradle.
The FPR is just stock, and probably even original. I haven't touched it in the 6 years that I've had the car.
The fuel pump itself is an OEM repacement from The Racers Edge:

I used an electrical tire pump to check both the return hose going into the cradle, as well as the connector on the fuel sender. There seemed to be no resistance against the pump, and I could see bubbles in the gas, which says to me that at least that little stretch of hose isn't clogged.
Of course, the return line could still be clogged anywhere along the stretch from the motor to the fuel sender. Is there a way to check/clean this (maybe attach an air compressor or something?)
Also, I don't have a pressure gauge, so I'm not sure exactly what the fuel pressure is.
