Ok, today as i was driving on the parkway as usual i was accelerating as normal going through the gears, however, when i was shifting from 4th to 5th it felt like there was a wall up and i couldnt get the car into 5th for the life of me. I got to my job, and it shifted into 5th just fine after that. I dont understand what happened though. Recently we installed a new clutch and shifter bushing.....but what could have caused this?? any suggestions would be great thanks.

John

When my '91 NX2000 started to do that, it occurred in 2nd for awhile then 3rd, then randomly between 2nd, 3rd, and 4th until I had nothing left but 1st and 5th.

The forks broke internally and I had to swap out tranny's.

Hopefully that's not what is wrong with yours.

Well, the car eventually started shifting ok until while i was driving it wouldnt shift into any gear besides 3rd. Then it got stuck in first, and i was on the highway when this happened. I was able to pull over and let it sit and i tried to force it through the gears but no good. It finally started to go through the gears as usual and didnt give me any problems on my way back from lunch. Does anyone have a clue as to what could be wrong here?? Thanks....John.

How are your motor mounts?

I am telling you this is like deja vu. That is the same exact way it happened for me. I do not know why it randomly worked then didn't work, but the forks were broken inside the tranny and they were blocking the shift pattern from allowing me to go into gear at random times until they finally just shut down 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears.

Try getting on the freeway with only 1st and 5th. Not fun! And boy was the smell of the clutch burning as I shifted to 5th ranchy as hell! Wew! Smelt like rotten eggs! I also had to get a new clutch. The car had around 124,000 miles on it when that happened.

These guys are right on the money. It's probably either the shift forks or motor mounts. I'd check your motor mounts first since that's the easiest. I've had collapsed motor mounts and broken tranny bolts which had my car to only shift into neutral and 2nd and it felt like a wall going into the other gears. $30 motor mount inserts from ES were a cure for me.
good luck,
Nick

Well, i drove my car to my friends house from work last night and the car wouldnt move over to go into 5th again. Well, we took a look at it and it couldnt see anything visibly wrong with the shift linkage. However the boot that goes from the linkage to the input shaft came off the input shaft end. So we reatached that. I drove the car home without any problems last night. But i want to pinpoint this problem. Should i try the motor mount inserts?? or do u think that tranny is on its way out?? Thanks again guys...John.

do the easiest/cheapest thing first. spend the $50 or so on the ES torque position inserts, and they take about 20-30 minutes to install... if that doesnt fix your problem, oh well, you still have ES mounts;) very worthwhile mod

Ok, im going to try the es mounts and believe that it will work. Now, just to verify. Im going to order the inserts from courtesy nissan however, they have two listings of mount inserts. One of them is the torque position inserts, and the other is the motor mounts. Which set is the one that i need that will hopefully alleviate this shifting problem im having?? thanks in advance...John.

Well, i picked up some of the es mounts from courtesy and me and my best bud chris (nismoser) were installing them yesterday. The car drove fine for a little while to his house, but then all of a sudden, the stick wouldnt move over to the right again, hence 5th and reverse became impossible to use. We did a mount simulation by using a 2 ton jack to jack up the tranny and engine to take pressure off the linkage to see if that would work. To no avail, that did nothing. We installed the rear tranny inserts to see if that would work, and nothing. So, unfortuanately it seems as if the problem is internal. Which blows alot. we just did the clutch on that car twice because of a faulty clutch disk. The tranny problem just started after i finished my break in period of 500 miles. We are not sure why all of a sudden the tranny started doing this, but i guess thats that. WE did notice that every time we did the clutch and we drained the fluid there were metal shavings on the drain plug, which of course is not good. Which is also strange because ive never had a problem with grinding shifts. Oh well, i found a local tranny for a half decent price thats coming with a good warranty, also its from a b14 with lsd. I will keep u guys posted, and thanks for your help.

Just wanted to quote myself here! :D Mine happened without any warnings as well.

Since this is what happened to me. I feel your pain.

After I read the motor mount reply, I highly doubt any motor mount on a SR20DE would ever block the shift linkage from shifting into gears no matter how cracked, blown or soft they are. You would literally have to remove the rear motor mount completely (and probably the tranny mount as well) to have the linkage hit the sway bar or any other part of the car to cause such a blockage.

Good luck on the replacement!

I had a problem like this recently. My car was almost impossible to get in 1st, 2nd, 5th, and reverse. I checked everything. I quickly assumed my tranny was shot. I forgot to check the simplest thing. My clutch cable. It lost its adjustment. Check that out before you go ripping the car apart.

Well, 6 hours later, John's car has a 95 200SX tranny and ES mounts and everything shifts smoothly!! That's the good news.

The bad news....now his alternator just took a s.h.i.t. on him. Like they say, if its not one thing its anohter.

Well on the bright side.... at this rate he'll have himself a new car here pretty quick. :D No, but really, sorry to hear about your troubles. Good luck with getting things sorted out!

Thanks for all your help guys, unfortuanately in the end, it was the most expensive and time consuming thing that was the problem...the tranny, like my boy chris said. Who i cant thank enough for being there for me to help me out. You da man bro. As for the car shifting smoothly now, yes, that i am happy about. Its not as precise feeling as my last tranny, but it will do and im sure i will get used to it. As for the clutch cable idea, Serican, thanks for the suggestions, as well as eveyrone elses. But, my problem seemed to be just moving over the stick to the right to get into 5th and reverse. all the other gears where fine, 1st thru 4th. I dont understand. I have never been hard on the car, no more then anyone else on there sr20 anyway. Well, eventually chris and i are going to take apart the old one and try to see what went wrong. thanks again guys....now i just have to replace my alternator.
