: cold air intake without fender modifications?

I'm trying to find out if anyone makes a cold air intake application for the 91-94 sentra se-r that does not modify the body/sheet metal?

I autocross in DSP, and installing one of these means opening that hole in the fender, which is illegal in my class. I'm trying to find one that will route in front of the battery down to the front of the transmission. This would also mean the battery would have to be moved, of course.

Now, I'm pretty doubtful about finding one ready to install, i'd probably either have to make my own or adapt an existing one.

Thoughts?

does the rule prohibit ANY modification of the body panel, or just cutting? i think you could fit it with some bending via a pair of vise grips, otherwise fab it up with 3" manrdrel bends, shouldnt be too hard or pricey.

i think a 2.5 would fit in that hole.. you should try it.. im getting one done.. copying the 3 pri CAI in 2.5

Grover built a 2.5" CAI for his ITS race car and was able to fit it through that hole without cutting. He did have to do just a bit of bending though.

We cannot modify the fender in ITS either.

I thought the rule was that you could not remove any sheet metal from the car. If this is the case, just cut the fender in 4 places and bend it up or down. This works just fine.

Cutting the metal is legal in DSP, but not in STS.

Thats interesting, I didn't realize you could cut the metal, as long as it isn't removed. I'll have to look through the rule book again.

After looking at that hole again, it looks like it would take some serious bending to fit. Its under 3" long by about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 wide.

So what is the diameter of the cold air intakes? is AEMs 2.5"? I was considering just making my own out of some mandrel bend steel tubing. My only concern is making the connections for the crank case ventilation, the idle air tube, and that vacuum line on top.

I wonder how easy it would be to braze on appropriate fittings? The rest of the cut pieces could be held together with hose clamps and rubber. I think if it was painted, it wouldn't look bad at all. I'm sure this has been covered before, so I'll do some searching.

from http://mouton.best.vwh.net/sccasolo/Rules/street_touring.html#17.2. Body Work

I believe this is acurate for STS:

Fenders may not be cut or flared but the inside lip may be rolled in order to gain tire clearance. Flares that are part (left out of rulebook for 2002, but I predict it will return...Ed.) of body kits may be attached to the stock fenders. The intention is to allow cars to maximize tire width up to the maximum allowable size. No other changes to the stock fenders or wheel wells are permitted.

I wish it weren't so. I want a CAI.

Me too! :) Here is what I'm doing (not sure if this is legal for sts, it will be for sp):

I'm installing a hawker genesis battery (same as dyna-batt) in a new battery tray. This way i have lots more room in front, and I can make my own cold air intake that routes out from the throttle body, straight forward towards the bumper, then down into the space in front of the transmission.
