i was looking at the gt4088 and the gt4088r and noticed that the gt4088 was a journal bearing but the gt4088r was a ball bearing turbo. whats the difference in the two? and what would be better?

ok well the journal bearring should be rebuildable and slower responding , and the ball bearing faster responding and non rebuildible , but ball bearring tend to last a lot longer and are water cooled as well nlt all journal bearring are , jurnal bearring are more like a brass bushing then anything else ...so they tend to be cheaper ..

ball bearings are far superior to journal bearings in many ways. Google that shit, regardless of the turbo. Think in terms of overall efficiency and over time.

Not to mention resistance to damage from compressor surge, don't ask me how I learned that one...

I think you can lay the blades flat on a BB turbo and the bearings would be fine...

wordness!! The GT CHRA is indestructible except for fod and oil starvation...

fair enough, Id say

u think a sr20 could spool a gt4088r?
or should i just go with a gt35r or something along the lines of that?

why do you want something that big? You wont be able to keep traction at 10 psi w/ a GT35R I cant keep traction above 3.3k or so w/ a GT30R.

Unless youre going to "stroke" the engine itd be kinda awkward

can a gt30r handle 25-28psi?

and im pretty power hungry lol im trying to get 550-600whp and hit 10's in the 1/4 mile
this build being over the course of a few years of course being that im still in school

a gt30r will hanle 25-28psi, yes.

With your car, you can probably go 10's on a GT30R (if you can hook traction)...

If you wanna just lay down big HP numbers, I would say 35r would be a better turbo for those goals. I run a 30r and put down 330whp @ 15psi, but I need Calum bad so I have a better way to tune.

You better have a built block if you're throwing a 30R in the mix.

Stock block can handle 400whp, yes... But can your headgasket and headstuds handle the boost of a 30r? 25~28psi on a 30r? Probably not.

Headgasket/studs would be necessary yes.

I've seen a couple of people push 30psi on 4g63s and a 3076R and one of them has had the turbo on their car for about 2yrs now with no problems. He also makes about 500whp.

I would honestly say it's doable, but like I said previously, go 35R if HP is what you're looking for.

yea im going to be building the block and head. im in the process of pulling this engine apart so i can bring the block and head to the machine shop a few miles down the road to get the block bored and the head ported and polished sometime during the summer when i have money.

i think ill probly go with a 30R first and if i dont like how that is then i can always sell the turbo and buy a 35R

^You looking for these numbers and you are 17? How many turbo cars have you driven? What is the fastest car you have driven? With that much power in a sentra is banana's for a 17 year old.

A 30r is MORE than enough power for you. TRUST ME.

Even at 9psi, it's a scary ride for the street. You'll wrap yourself around a pole without a lot of driving time on a high powered turbo car.

fastest as in highest hp? i would say my uncles old eclipse... had like 450ish hp. and i learned how to drive on an a4 1.8t

this isnt going in my daily driver.... i would be crazy if i wanted that as a daily im going to build the engine and put it in a b13 shell when i can find a good one for cheap.

^ :iagree:........Be careful kid. A fully bolted DE would be enough for you, unless you have some MAD early age driving skills.

P.S. This car NOT being your daily has nothing to do with it NOT being able to throw you all over the place. All it takes is one pass, or one test drive down the street.

Good luck though

as mentioned in that last post

its going to be mainly a track car other then driving to/from the track.

Track car or not, that's a TON of power in a light car.

The shop owner here refuses to run his track car on the local track, because they don't have all of the safety requirements met for the track. He's running a 640whp civic and has almost put it in the wall 4 times. Mind you he's in his mid thirties and has been tracking cars longer than you've been alive.

Be prepared to at least spend some serious money, making that car class legal, when you put it down the track. You won't be able to run it to it's potential without the safety precautions to save YOU in the event of a failure.
