Well after 107,000+ miles my starter decided to crap out on me last night. It wasn't a slow gradual death either...it just went. Is this thing a pain in the ass to replace? Haven't really gotten a chance to research yet but for those that don't mind. How much did you pay and does it have to be a new unit? Will the Local Autoparts store brand work? ( Alternators reference ) is it a pain in the ass or pretty straight foward? I have a 96 B14. Thanks.

Irwin,
Try getting one from Andreas. They're like $65-70 or so. It's a fairly easy R&R. Me and Walter did it in about 1.5 hrs BSing as we usually do. :)

It's not that hard to remove, but it will take two people. You'll have to remove the airbox and possibly some of the intake stuff to get at the bolts that hold it in.
I would recommend saving some money and just rebuilding your starter. Clean it up and put new brushes on it and it should be fine. I believe a new starter runs around $180 or so and the brushes will cost you $35 or less. I believe Andreas Miko sells rebuilt starters for less than $180. I think someone else here bought one from him.

My car is the biggest B#@%$ to work on! You know.....Im really not looking foward to getting one of those "FAWK..I should've payed somebody to do this headaches! " lol....I got quoted 240 for parts and labor from a local mechanic...not worth huh? I'll try to price one from a Autoparts store around here and see how much its going to cost me if I were to do it myself.

I recently bought a starter from Andreas. $75 shipped, worked perfectly and was very very clean.
Install is easy. Clear out intake hoses, 2 14mm bolts hold it in in that area. Crawl under the car, pull the starter out, undo the power wire with a 12mm box end wrench and unclip the (clutch safety switch)?
Removal is the reverse. Oh, don't forget to disconnect your battery. You don't want any accidental jolts.
Took me 20 minutes to do the last starter i did.

Yeah my pops had his rebuilt around 180,000 miles and it went until the car died at 360,000.
Only cost him 50 bucks at a local shop.

Thanks for the replies everybody! Seems like I'd be fool to pay someone to do it. (Espcecially 240 bucks!) Thanks again!

You can rebuild a starter yourself for about $20. Not really too hard.

My starter just went out. I believe there are two starters you can get: one from Hitachi and one from Mitsubishi. I bought the Mitsu one because I heard it's suppossed to be better. They are both about the same, = $70 for a rebulit one from Autozone. I paid a mechanic $60 to put it in and I was done.
Wierd note: the Mitsu starter was longer than the original Hitachi one, but they both work.

Classic/NX owners may be forgetting - the B14 guys have the big ass bracket holding the intake manifold up thats in the way - it sucks big time...
Though I remember being able to remove the started with the bracket on when I did TUNED 200's DET swap, probably easier since we had the exaust off and axles out though...
