TREYDEE 08-09-2002, 12:56 AM Need help getting it off,When I had the USDM in there
I could take it off buy hand easily,Why is it so Damn
hard to do now.My grandfather told me to hammer a
screwdriver into it,but I don't mannnnnnn?????????
Help
kpw97 08-09-2002, 12:59 AM Don't do the screwdriver technique!!!! I did that and ended up destroying my oil filter mount. Go to pepboys or whatever and buy one of those oil filter removers that clamps around the entire housing. I know snap-on makes some. You'll be glad you made the investment. Goodluck man.
AaroNX 08-09-2002, 01:00 AM I don't understand mine comes off quite easily. I also use K&N oil filters and they have a 1 inch head on them so that you can use a wrench to tighten and loosen them.
TREYDEE 08-09-2002, 01:08 AM Thanx so much for the advise!!!!!
SmoothDaddyFig 08-09-2002, 01:20 AM Channel Locks homeboy!!
Its what I have always done.
tierdrop 08-09-2002, 01:46 AM kpw97 is right i had a 93 nx2k and couldnt get them oil filter off so i put a screw divr throgh it and it broke the steam that it screw on off it cost me about 400 dollars to get it fix so go spent a couple of dollars at your local shop and get an oil filter wrench
PSSSHHHGOESMYSR20 08-09-2002, 02:44 AM Get the CUP type that slipps over the filter, where you connect a wratchet wrench to turn it. Those work the best for me.
eric96ser 08-09-2002, 10:02 AM Don't ever use a wrench to tighten an oil filter. The oil pressure tighten the filter even more, and you can do damage if you try to loosen it. Hand tight is good enough.
llaprad1 08-09-2002, 11:37 AM I take a flathead screwdriver with a sharp edge. Gently tap it into the side of the oil filter coming at a tangent.
Kind of like this:
/O
So that the corner of the flat head is slightly diggin into the filter. You may have to dent in the filter a little for it to catch.
That should get you started enough to unscrew it by hand.
And no stabbing is necessary.
AaroNX 08-09-2002, 12:42 PM You don't exactly tighten it with the wrench, you hand tighten it and then turn it a 1/4 turn with the wrench.
SmoothDaddyFig 08-09-2002, 05:31 PM Uh, I dont recommend tightening with a wrench no matter what. Hand TizIGHT is good enough. But thats just my MAD POWER opnion.
blairellis 08-09-2002, 05:36 PM the only way I would tighten it with a wrench would be if the engine is too hot to get my hand in there without burning myself...i stabbed it once and got scared to do that again....it didnt feel right...well it wasnt but hehe...anyways i got a filter wrench and hafve used it since then...how did this get to the tightening topic? it says remove not tighten
ScarCrow28 08-09-2002, 11:44 PM i use the socket style, sometimes a bit tricky to get it on the filter, but it seems to be the best angle for me.
but i have a GA, so i don't know what i 'm talking about.
but why is it tight in the first place? was it JDM installed?? i would hope that whoever did it didn't forget to oil the new filter's seal before putting it on!! that would diffinetely be a bad thing. but i'm sure you guys know that already.
wahhh, i want an XE-R! 4dr no less.
vladha 08-10-2002, 01:20 AM I just changed the oil and filter on my '91 Classic, with ABS. I mention the ABS because having the ABS and the supporting crap leaves even less room than Classics w/o ABS.
Anyway, you cannot twist or remove the filter by going strictly from the top. Stand in front of your car facing the engine bay, reach your left hand around the engine and behind the passenger motor mount. I'm kind of short, but I could still reach it.
Anyway, you should be able to get your hand on the filter from there. If you can't unscrew it with your hand, use a cap filter wrench that fits over the top and use your 3/8" ratchet wrench to loosen the filter. I bought mine for $4 at Discount Auto. After loosening the filter, undo by hand.
Now, use your right hand over the top, from above, to help lift the filter out... hope you let it drain.
To install the new filter, follow directions in reverse. Make sure that it's threaded correctly before tightening.
Any questions... just ask.
Later,
Mark
best way is to use your hand, and if u can't, get a girl with smaller hands to do it for u.
damn, that sounds so dirty what i *** said
Yosho 08-10-2002, 11:02 AM Best thing I've found for doing oil changes is the 3 prong'd filter wrench attachment. I've tried the cup styles... and they're "ok" if you get a metal one (the plastic ones suck). Having done thousands of oil changes on Nissans though, the 3 prong'd one works best. You should be able to buy one at your local discount/supply auto store.
PSSSHHHGOESMYSR20 08-10-2002, 12:49 PM I never said use a wrench to tighten the oil filter I said to use it to take it off. You can put it back on by hand if you like.

njdan69 08-10-2002, 01:11 PM if you remove the A/C and Anti lock if you have it then the filter is quite accessable by hand or a wrench.
Just my 2 cents.
