Well it finally happened. I got the cams hooked up. Lets just say that even with the quaife this car spins it tires when the cams engage. And that is with SO3's. It is amazing "chirp, chirp chirp" all while it pulls up in first gear and with out touching the clutch, just rolling on fast at a low speed. I love the feel of this engine. It is very progressive and easy to control as you accelerate. Perfect for autocrosses and driver schools. To me it pulls past 7K hard. I hit the 7500 redline in first and second so easy that its got to be making power up high. BTW a true 7500rpm shows as 7800 on my tach. I also got the 2.5 inch exhaust hooked up with no resonator. It is loud and annoying but the resonator will be in next week. I am going to the drags tonight to see what I can run. It will be interesting because I have never drag raced a FWD car. Wish me luck.

Good to hear Steve. I can't wait to hear how you run.

Good luck, but I don't think you'll need it. :D

Thanks for the help with the relay's. Worked like a charm. I also have a 2-piece HD rotor wilwood brake setup with the Maxima rears. They are great. This is really more of an autocross and driving school car. I also run it with 2 deg negative camber up front.

Drag results???

Ok, this was my first time drag racing my car. Here are the results: R/T .909, 60’= 2.380, 330’=6.369, 1/8=9.646@75.23, 1000’=12.435, ¼=14.800 @ 94.93. To be honest I was hoping for better. This was my firsts time running my car. I have a couple questions also. My exhaust was rattling huge after I got to the track. Could that have activated my knock sensor and caused the timing to retard? I also know I need to get my 60’ time down and that will help. I was on street tires, No weight reducing at all (spare tire and jack still in car). This is on a 98 SE. With a stock sr20ve, CAI, and Fujitsuba Header and no sr16 cams. I also think my intake and exhaust RPM switches may be backwards but I didn’t have time to check that yet. I doubt that would do much after the 60’ time because I don’t think I drop bellow the switch point after first gear. I was shifting at 7500rpm. I was launching at 2700rpm and did not slip the clutch any more then on the street. It is a brand new clutch so I was being careful. For all of you wondering about the 2.5 inch exhaust. It is going back. It melted my rear valance (bumper cover) and is hitting the rear beam. Those jokers did a crappy job running the thing. After the 1.5-hour trip to the strip it would rattle on every shift and bump. It did sound really cool without the resonator in it. It was so loud that everyone in my car wore earplugs on the highway.

Edit: With the MSD ignition I was running a .045 gap on my plugs. That was mid way between .04 and.05 for what the MSD instructions say. Any ideas?

i believe the knock sensor is made les sensitive in the jwt program because of all of the performance parts and engine vibration association with go fast parts. wouldnt be reasonable to have a built up car just to have the computer start pulling timing out when you need it. you should be able to see a 14.2 on decent street tires. and a high 13 on drag radials. it takes practice to get used to your car. i whittled my times from 14.1 on slicks down to a 13.2 and all i did was keep driving better.

steve are you happy with your car now? do you think it still lacks somehting?

I tell you it feels really nice. I can't stand the exhaust with no resonator but the VE feels great. It is just the oppisite of the Spec V as far as the engine is concerned. It just is so smooth and pulls so nicely. This will make a great autocross car. I will probably be doing the SR16VE cams after I get my car to a dyno. Maybe next weekend for the dyno. I do still wonder about loosing some low end torque for some of the low speed autocrosses that we have around here. Also, that quaife is the perfect match. I only spin my tires when I want to on the street once moving. They might chirp every now and then but they never truely spin for any amount of time. It's unreal to power out of corners that fast and not spin the tires. If I was really into drag racing I might put a bigger and accurate tach on my car. Mine is off by at least 300rpm-400rpm or so based on when my revlimiter kicks in with the MSD. Do you think my gap is OK at .045 with the MSD?

A group of us went to Virginia Motorsports Park (VMP) in Dinwittie/Petersburg. I did meet someone with a read talon/eclipse but it was a first generation, I think a 91. He was asking a lot of questions about the car. Post in the East section to do a get together with the SR20 group. This was very short notice but we did post friday morning.

What!? Hmmmm my engine has to be lame then! :(

If I start slow in first gear and then gives it some throtle, then my wheels doesn't spin!? :(

Advice for error correction please!? :)
