The exhaust system on my classic recently sprung a leak and I have decided to upgrade to a performance cat-back exhuast. I'm looking for something that is reasonably quiet, but still gives a good performance upgrade (or at least as much as a catback can on our cars). What have some of your experiences been?

personally, I think that you can do WAY better than any aftermarket system for alot less by making your own exhaust using premade mandrel bends, and your choice of muffler and resonator

I second that.

I would rather get a header, but my exhaust needs to be repaired anyway...

The replies above are true. SE-R's had decent cat-backs from the factory. An aftermarket unit isn't the most cost effective method of gaining H.P. on a B13 SE-R. It can be a good investment towards gaining more horses in the future when used in combination with other bolt-ons, such as cams.

One thing that I've heard to be a really good compromise is using Courtesy's S.S. b-pipe (only $185 or so) with the stock muffler. If your original can is in decent shape, you may want to consider this option.

I was in a similar situation when the exhaust (b-pipe and muffler) on my '92 SE-R began to rust apart. I looked around at all the available performance cat-backs, but I was ultimately seduced by Courtesy Nissan's stainless steel cat-back (made by Top-Speed). I know, I know... I was warned that it was loud, but went ahead with the purchase anyway. Everyone is right. It is loud, but I have yet to regret its purchase. You should see it! Polished S.S. from tip to tip. It's a work of art.

The new Stromung (sp?) brushed stainless exhausts that Mossy Nissan carries would have been on my short list, had they been available when I purchased my Courtesy exhaust.

Good luck with your search,

I'll second the HKS exhaust. Its relatively quiet but still fairly deep sounding. If you don't want to put your own together and you want a mandrel bent exhaust, then an aftermarket catback is they way to go.

I bought it for about $435 from NOPI.

Thanks for the input. Consensus seems to be that the HKS is the way to go for my needs (performance enhancing, but still reasonably quiet). I appreciate the feedback.

Get the HKS. I have it on my classic. My CAI is louder than my exhaust. You can choose the custom route and save yourself some money or buy the HKS and save yourself the headache. There is no monetary value on pain-in-the-ass, i.e. custom exhaust.

God that HKS muffler looks so sleeper! I wish they made one for NX's... :(

Getting back to the topic now....I've heard good things about the HKS exhausts. It seems you get what you pay for.

I have the Stromung cat-back and it is great. I have the dual 3 inch tips. It is a little pricey though. If you buy it direct it is like $550, but there is always group buys going with them. I can email you a pic. (don't know how to put one on this page)

The consensus says; HKS. Please note that setup will be expensive. If want a noticable power increase, get a header with the cat back. A night and day difference. Talk to other folks before making your decision. out.

I am in the process of getting a costum 2.5 inch put on my B14. So far it has been a PITA. The guys put it to close to the rear bumper cover and it melted part of it. So now I get it fixed right or get a Greddy (only option for a b14 that isn't 2.25 inch's in size).
