: Engine *Whirring* Noise?

Recently I have noticed a loud whirring, whizzing type sound (Like an electric RC car motor almost... for lack of a better description..) when I step on the gas in my 96 200sx SE-R. It doesn't seem to happen at certain times (hot, cold, morning, etc.) it just seems to be random; sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. Upon checking through the archives I found a couple threads about some Classics with this problem and it turned out to be a failing Powersteering pump.... I cranked the wheels in both directions several times and the noise did not seem to subside at all. If anyone can give me some advice or help I would appreciate it?

It seems to be centered under the hood of the car; so I am assuming that is it engine, clutch, or tranny related... (blarg, just what I need right now!) Thanks in Advance everyone!

 :(

Well, a couple days ago when I cranked the wheels during the sound it didn't subside; but upon trying again today, it makes a difference. The noise becomes more prevalent from all the way in one direction to about a quarter of a turn back towards the center. Damn... maybe it is powersteering related... which leads me to my next question?

If the pump fails on me, will the car act like it never had powersteering? or will it lock up my wheels or something like that?

TIA

*sigh* :(
