From 3000 rpm it literaly crawls until 3500 and then takes off again. I cleaned up the EGR a little and it seemed to fix it a little (it was real bad at lower rpms). I changed the PCV valve, and put some octane boost on a fresh tank of gas. Just today I regrouned the MAF on a long shot, but all it helped was the throttle response.

A while ago I did get a MIL for the EGR valve & EVAP canister purge control. For what ever reason the plug came off the connector. Could this have led to some damage to the system? I haven't gotten any MIL's since then

I always had a dead spot there until I advanced my timing some more. I had it at 16* running 87oct. No change with 91oct. I changed it to 19* it was a completely different animal. No more dead spot.:)

RIght now my timing is at 17 degrees, and 92 octane. I'm gonna pick a timing light this week and check it. I don't trust my mechanic any more, so I'm just gonna learn how to fix my owm car.

Lately the problem has been random. ANd has only been doing it at half throttle through the first 3 gears. This leads me to beleive that the octane booster is doing a little cleaning.

Random? Mine was consistant.

Half throttle is closed loop, have you checked your O2 sensor?

I think the 96s build up carbon real bad.
I just tried the Redline SR1 cleaner. No alcohol to corrode the injectors. Runs smoother now.

I know what you mean about the build up. Some of the ports on the EGR equipment were completely blocked with carbon. I was surprise i never threw a MIL. I used the NOS street octane boost and manually checked and cleaned the EGR stuff as best i could.

I'm about at about a half tank with the octane boost the car seems to be pulling stronger and smoother.

thanks for the assistance pete.

If the EGR was coated in carbon, I would suggest having your throttle body cleaned ultrasonically. I had mine done at a local shop, and it did wonders for smoothness & throttle response at any RPMs.

I love my Nissans (I own 3), but the EGR system is for the birds. Yeah, let's introduce dirty burnt exhaust gasses into the intake system of the car. What were they thinking?

Best of luck...

My "dead spot" comes on at around 2000 rpms and ends at 3200. Being that I have a 94 se-r, there is no EGR to blame. What do I do?

Tell me more about this red line fuel injection cleaner. I thought nothing but ultrasonic cleanings could help us out there.

There's a snippet on SE-R.net about it. There tech support said it did not affect Nissan's pintleless(sp?) injectors. The label says OK with Nissan vehicles.
Pepboys carries it along with water wetter.
Buy a funnel, the bottle isn't pour friendly.

Oops- SL-1 not R

Around here, the fuel is gasahol 9 mo out of the year. This stuff wasn't going to hurt even if it did have alcohol in it.
Since their water wetter really works, I tried it.

arg i got this damn dead spot too! it just started to happen recently, and its from 2600-3000rpms. The only thing i can think of is that i didnt replace my O2 sensor yet and my car has 135k mi. My timing is at 20 degrees, i run 92 octane gas, my AIV, EGR and all emissions are disconnected, i replaced my PCV valve and vented it to the open, the other tube on the side of the valve cover next to the dist. is routed to the open also to prevent carbon build up and i cleaned the intake real good. Ill try replacing the O2 sensor next and hopefully it will get rid of the jerky throttle also. If not im gonna kick myself in the ass. this dead spot really sucks, i never had it before and it lags real bad.

The fix for me was plugging up the small hose going from the bpt valve to the egr valve and also the hose going from the egr to the intake hose. I also added a bottle of redline sl-1 fuel system cleaner, which se-r.net says is the only safe additive for our cars, and my problems dissapeared.
