Since my thread on the General forum went to sh!ts, I might as well ask here.
I need help with exhaust. Do I go aftermarket or custom. What are the gains? Does anyone have HKS or something other then Greddy? Post pics guys, I need some help.

I researched a little on exhaust setups: custom and HKS, Greddy types...
They both cost about the same really...
you could always buy the mandrel bends and straight pieces, get a muffler/tip combo and go to a muffler shop, you may save a little.
I plan on going the cusom route because I don't like the flashy aftermarket systems with big tips...

This is my plan for my B14 exaust, a very stock looking thermal R&D muffler 2.5" 16" long $115 at nopi, take the stock tip off of my car and have it welded on the thermal. Then for piping JCwhitney madrel bends for the bends and just regular 2.5 inch mufflershop piping, I have yet to look at what kind of bends I need so I cant quote a price on that yet bu the bends come in 180' ,90', and 45' bends and they range from $6-$19, My geuss is for the bends $60 thats high balling it. and the muffler shop that i go to said $60 to weld all up. so
115+60maybe+60 =$235 compared to HKs or greddy at the lowest $475 and higher usually+ shipping its sounds good to me,
anyone have issues with this please tell me because this is just my brainstorm.

That's about right. HKS or greddy or Courtesy still are better for power. IMO unless you are going all out N/A 2.5 is too wide for mandrel bends (my greddy=2.36 hks=slightly less).
Its ok for pinch bent ***. 2.5 is the min. for turbo, probably need at least 2.75 to be safe.
In defense of HKS; it's quiet, effective, stealth, and often cheaper than greddy. In all fairness I don't know Stromung too well but hear good things too. My greddy does have a ricey can on it.
I actually wouldn't mind taking my GReddy muffler off and selling it, then putting some sort of smaller muffler on. The GReddy muffler is a MONSTER.

I know this may be slightly out of context for you but I just dynod my VE (when it was not quite right) and made 12 whp with the 2.5 inch mandrel over my stock B14 exhaust. I lost power nowhere in the RPM band. I would love to throw a greddy on and do a comparision on the dyno.

I'm sure the Greddy would make less as it's a smaller diameter. This is assuming you used a straight thru muffler (sure you did :)) Did you use a resonator too because the Greddy does have one which might suck up a half HP or so......

The shop ordered the wrong size resonator so this run was without one. I am getting a resonator installed soon. I might also get a straights pipe to replace the cat and the resonator for the track. Just a thought. It would be cool to test it on the dyno. I used a Magnaflow Perforated Core muffler. And it was real loud on the highway with out a resonator. Sounds real cool.

Plus resonator, right? Still cheaper though. Post exactly what bends and lenghts were used if you decide to do this. I'd be interested in the recipe.
