: hmm.. S3s are in.. car starts.. but
atomicbomberman 08-13-2002, 05:30 PM I put in the new distributor, and start the car, it starts, the idle is a bit high but that's probably because it's been sitting cold for the weekend. Anyway, I'm getting a light tapping sound from the engine, frequency is about 240tap per minute I would think... I shut the engine off quickly after that, can someone tell me what I should check for?
Andreas Miko 08-13-2002, 06:27 PM Some engines when they sit long enough when changing cams loose the oil out of the lifters. You usaly have to let the car get hot until the oil can get to the lifter and push the air out. The noise will go away. This is all with the impression that you put the cams in correctly. Call me when you get a chance 305-282-3643.

MauiBlueGride 08-13-2002, 06:47 PM timing way off and detontation maybe?
Smoke and a pancake?
Chris
atomicbomberman 08-13-2002, 07:05 PM ok, I think the clicking noise went away, either that or I'd gotten so used to it but I can't hear it anymore. I did the first phase of breaking in the car that is let the idle 1500rpm for 10-15 minutes, the idle is quiet now back down to 750rpm, it's only slightly rough, does that sound right?
oh ya, it seems like something was burning off inside too, because when I first start the car, there's the clicking noise and then there are some smoke comming out of the valve cover, I just assume it was either my hand greese or some other stuff the put on the cam that's burning off so I jsut let that go on, sure enough the smokes are gone.
One thing that is bothering me is the EGR noise, u know how when you let off the gas pedel the exhaust gas recirculate thinge starts working, and for those of u with modify intake u know that there's this one whole u get like a mini filter to plug into it and you always get this small noise whenever u let off the gas pedel, like some gas jsut bleed out.. well.. that noise gotten a lot louder.. is that normal?
AaroNX 08-13-2002, 09:00 PM I believe you are mistaking the AIV for the EGR. The AIV is on the front of the motor and is used to introduce fresh air into the exhaust stream. The egr is on the intake manifold.
atomicbomberman 08-13-2002, 09:16 PM ok probably right
the AIV then, still, is it suppose to be this loud?
eric96ser 08-13-2002, 10:17 PM Does the ticking sound like these:

After my motor rebuild, I'm getting these noises. Mike Kojima and I think its valve train noise. I'm going to take the cams out and "burp" the HVLAs and check the rocker arms. I don't have my S3s in until I got these noises fixed.

if you have a baby K&N filter on the AIV, then yes it will have that noise. The PR and AEM intakes have a fitting to let you hook the AIV back up to the intake. You might want to see if you can buy the adapter from PR. It replaces the MAF adapter you have now.

My motor also sounds similar to that with the S4 cams.
AaroNX 08-14-2002, 09:52 AM My PR intake has no place to hook the AIV hose back up. Don't get me wrong I took the AIV off the original motor and the JDM motors don't have them, but I am curious as to why mine doesn't have it. Maybe cause its old, I have had it for around 3 years now.
scmser 08-14-2002, 07:40 PM Get rid of the AIV. I hate that shit. Take it off, plug the manifold, plug the vacuum line, done. Plug off the EGR and BPT, too. Worthless crap. Just reinstall the line between the EGR and BPT on emissions day. Cleans up the engine a bit, too.
tommyJ 08-16-2002, 09:13 AM I assume plugging wont work for my 98' will it:(
