Do all downpipes require you to use the elbow off of the turbo exhaust outlet? Are there any that replace the elbow and bolt directly to the turbine outlet? This is for a Gti-R t28 turbo. I do have the elbow but don't understand why the downpipes are $250 plus if they don't replace the elbow.

My sr20dev. DP for the T25 uses the elbow.

Most, probably use the cast elbow which is set up to work with the internal wastegate. The port for the wastegate makes the downpipe a little more tricky to make if it has to bolt directly to the turbo. Also, I believe that elbow houses the O2 fitting. Its not impossible to make, but utilizing the cast elbow just simplifies the down pipe and may not hinder performance too much with that size turbo.

In addition to what Ben said, it is also difficult to make a downpipe clear A/C equipment without using the elbow. It is a very tight bend, and can be done, but it is not easy and likely has limited returns for the labor required.
