I guess it's time for Tsuru headlight action...

Yesterday, cruising along the highway in the right lane and all of a sudden a flying piece of metal looms in front of me headed right at me. I had no where to go and could barely do anything except brace myself and throw my arms up in front of my face.

Here's the gruesome results (http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/antoniog/lst?.dir=/Damage+pics&.src=ph&.view=)

Apparently, that hunk of metal was being batted around by a few cars for a while, until a van in the lane to the left of me ran over it, kicked it up 10 feet in the air and had a trajectory right for me. I consider myself lucky.

Be safe out there fellas,

Good thing you didn't get hurt! That must have SUCKED.

Did the metal stick in your car or something? Can you track down where it came from by chance?

damn, that sucks. Sorry bout the car, lucky you still have a head! Time for a carbon fiber hood! I think the windshield on a classic is cheap, but let me know, i need one!

Very similar thing happened to me around DC in 2000 going to a Prosolo in PA. A big piece of sheet metal was picked up by the draft of the truck in front of me and I plowed right into it at 70 mph!

My car is still scarred. Just a flesh wound.

Glad to hear you're okay. People have been killed by objects going through the windshield.

Holy chet!!! must have been a big peice of metal, looks like it may have been from a truck or some $hit, classics got pretty hefty metal on the hood, glad to hear you're ok and at least your classic is fixable, maybe it is time for a mexican upgrade, here comes the tsuru LOL

Antonio,

you are extremely lucky!!!

I know you have to be unlucky to encounter a IFO (Identified Flying Object) while driving your car but it could be much worse!

I have had 3 first (ok, 1st to 2nd hand) hand experiences in the past 15 years and all of them were much more harmfull than yours.

1. Driving a brand new Sunny 2.o GTi back in July 1992 we encountered a steel rod that fall of the track preceeding us. We were doing close to 110mph and the damn thing went through the front of the car, the entire engine block and pierced the firewall low on the passenger-side foot area. No bodily harm but huge $$$ for the damage.

2. Friend doing 60 on a rainy day "caught" part of the protective barrier that flew after the car up front lost cotrol and hit it. Driver and rear right passenger had among them 2 broken arms and 200+ stitches after they barely made it to the nearest hospital.

3. This is actually 2nd hand and freaky. Road racing between a Fiat Punto GT (turbo) and a Civic VTi ended when the Fiat hit the curb, capsized and hit a huge power pole. Woman in a Nissan Micra stoped on the opposite lane traffic light some 200 feet ahead was unfortunate enough to catch the flying Fiat engine. Both the Fiat driver and the woman were dead on the spot.

So, considering the potential harm, your encounter was as benign as they get. May they always be so...

Chris

Yeah, it was a crazy experience - I swear my eyes must have gotten huge like they do in cartoons and I know I didn't breathe while I saw that thing flying at me.

I was able to get that piece of metal because it actually ended up on the shoulder after it hit my car (I was in the right-most lane). I was hoping someone might have known where it came from, but no such luck. :(

hpro - those are some crazy stories!

I know!

If we live long enough we will see it all! After 20 years behind the wheel I have seen plenty! Let alone what I have seen riding motorcycles. Those stories would fill the entire forum...

Take care Antonio....

I had a large PVC pipe fitting nail the front of my XE awhile back on the interstate. Put a nice crease in the hood, gouged the paint really good. Pales in comparison to the damage you took though. I'd be getting estimates to see if turning that in to the insurance company is worthwhile. Oh, who am I kidding, unless you take thousands of dollars worth of damage, it's not worth turning in, fuckers raise your rates because you used what you pay for. Shitty deal, sorry it had to happen to you. At least you were able to change your shorts afterward. :)

Remember those punks dropping rocks off overpasses onto the autobahn? I forget how many people they killed.
