: Dealer says $850 for fuel injector replacement?
SR20 Inside 08-16-2002, 08:45 PM My car has a little trouble starting at times but its no big deal. I took it to the dealer today and they tell me that my fuel injectors are bad and that it's going to cost me $850 to put new ones in. Is this quote correct? Can't I do it myself lol? Any input would help, thnx.
Calum 08-16-2002, 08:55 PM For brand new nissan ones, with labor included, thats probably about right. You can find a used set waaaaaaaaay cheaper (try under $100). Yes you can do it yourself. What exaclty is the problem though? _If_ its a bad injector, its probably just one though. How bad does it idle?
SR20 Inside 08-16-2002, 08:59 PM It doesn't idle bad at all, just a little hesitant when I try to start it up. He says that one if not more are leaking into the engine and it is flooding it so when that happens my car won't start right up I have to pump the gas once or twice to get it to rollover. He suggested to run some fuel injector cleaner through it to see if it cleaned it up maybe dirt was the cause and if not then that is what it would cost from them. BTW my car is 96 g20t. And the idle is almost perfectly fine, I do notice it drops a little bit every once in a while but just barely, seems normal to me it's such a small variance. What do you think?
Thanks man.

I guess the dealer doesnt read Nissan's own Technical Service Bulletins.
llaprad1 08-16-2002, 09:38 PM For about $100, RC Engeneering (plus other) can bench test them *and* clean them the *right* way.
SR20 Inside 08-16-2002, 10:03 PM Damn well I am in utah where do you sugget I take it or should I throw some injector cleaner in my tank next time I gas up?
AaroNX 08-16-2002, 11:09 PM DON'T USE FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER
I honestly don't even think its your injectors. IF it was it would run rich constanly not just having trouble starting. ITs probably the IACV for something. If your dealer told you to use fuel injector cleaner you should take it somewhere else.
SR20 Inside 08-16-2002, 11:35 PM what's wrong with fuel injector cleaner? I used it on my maxima and it improved the performance quite a bit.

Check that out. I used to use it too, but when the masters talk I listen.

With next day FedEx, RC Engineering did it in a 3-day turnaround. Look em up on se-r.net
BORNGEARHEAD 08-17-2002, 01:16 AM Nissan now recommends 1 type of injector cleaner on Nissans. It is made by 3M. We have gotten bulletins from Nissan and our parts guys get this 3m cleaner from Nissan. Working at a dealership we now do this. You probably have 1 bad injector and they are telling you that you need all 4, to cover they're butts. Don't want the customer pissed off if they replace 1 and it doesn't fix it. I would suggest you take the injectors and go get them cleaned. I got mine done at a shop for $64. If you don't know where to get them done, look up diesel shops. A lot of them do injector service or know where you can get them done. After I got mine done I noticed a smoother idle and smoother acceleration. Hope this helps.
scmser 08-17-2002, 10:17 AM Buy a used fuel rail from a salvage yard. It's easier to swap the whole rail than one injector. If that doesn't fix your problem, then injectors aren't your problem. Return the rail and get your money back.
SR20RACER 08-17-2002, 10:48 AM Chronicg20t, what dealership are you taking it to? I live in Utah also and I can suggest a better dealership/mechanic if you need one.
NismoPC 08-17-2002, 11:57 AM Hey Chronic. Sounds like the dealer is trying to stick it to you! When I bought mine, it was a one owner who had all his service done at the dealers and he did a lot of city driving in it. I had similiar issues with mine.
Try these things first if you are able to. (see my sig, just without the 't')
- If this has not been done recently replace the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor.
- Clean the hell out of the throttle body
- Once that is cleaned out, drive the car for a while and make sure all the throttle body/carb cleaner has dried up in the intake manifold
- Check to make sure your base idle is set properly. If not correct it. Probably set too low. Just a hunch.
- Then check your timing. It will probably be set at around 12-13 degrees if your car has not been modified and all service was done at the dealership. Either set it at 15 degrees or you can increase it safely to 17 degrees, but you need to run higher octane.
This might be the answer to your sluggish starts and what not.
Hope this helps. Most of the procedures for the above list can be easily found on www.se-r.net! Good luck
NismoPC 08-17-2002, 12:02 PM Oh, forgot to add:
- My car had around 40K when I purchased it
- My plugs, cap, & rotor were the original - never replaced
- My base idle was at 450-500 rpms
- My timing was at 12 degrees
- My throttle body was disgustingly filthy
I knew the G20 was heavier than my '91 NX2000 and therefore slower, but it ran extremely sluggish until I performed the above maintenance. After that and a few mods, I am very pleased with the peformance out of my compact family sedan. :D
SR20 Inside 08-17-2002, 07:40 PM Hey sr20racer I took it to the ken garf dealership downtown on 8th south and west temple. I have a feeling they have been taking me like the fool I am from the start those bastards! Who do you suggest? Where do you live at? Also um nismo I don't know much about cars so I don't know half the shit you said lol. Um I guess I better read up and learn before I do anything, I'll also take back the stp injector cleaner that I got from pep boys today :). I guess Ill keep reading unless I find some 3m fluids that will work. Thanks for all the help!

Damn you can buy two jdm sr20's for that much and still have money left over. lol:D
Try www.sr20de.net for some of the procedures that NismoPC talked about.
SR20 Inside 08-17-2002, 10:06 PM sweet ive been reading up on it a little bit but i am still trying to figure out how to get in touch with these rc engineering fellows
SR20RACER 08-17-2002, 10:22 PM I live in Layton, but Garffs is where I was going to suggest. I know Bob who is a mechanic there and he does work on the side for me. I didn't want to install cams myself and he did it for $200. Also I know a parts guy that has worked there for 5 years and can get you good deals on parts. We should meet and you can borrow my injectors to see if that is really the problem. I am going to go turbo and my car is all tore to hell so you can use them to see if that is the real problem before spending any money on getting them cleaned. PM me.
SR20 Inside 08-17-2002, 10:25 PM Hey is this the 3m stuff you are talkin about?
