: Exhaust System (BroSpeed)
MervynG 08-18-2002, 08:33 AM Hi Guys,
Ok, before this post ends up being 'Use the "search" feature',
I did.
I cantacted Nissan Motor Sport here in South Africa for exhaust system
recommendations and they suggested that I go the BroSpeed
route cos is has been proven in South Africa.
PS, we don't get the access to the exhaust systems that you
guys have.
I was told that there is average and proven 8% power improvement with the BroSpeed route.
So the question is:
1) did any one try the BroSpeed exhaust system
and if 'Yes', could the average of 8% power improvement be true?
2) Is there any comparisons between the BroSpeed system and
other performance systems out there?
(I would have checked locally but I have only 1 friend with a SR20 in South Africa and he has a built up 60mm stainless system. We don't have a local Nissan forums in SA)
Any feedback will be appreciated guys,
TIA,
Mervyn G,
South Africa
NismoGizmo 08-18-2002, 10:45 AM While I don't have personal experience with Bosal BroSpeed, the pieces I have seen from them have been okay but not really enything to write home about.
I currently use the GReddy BL system on my 91 SE-R. Good power delivery with basic mods and a nice, smooth tone. Not raspy, a throaty and mellow sound. It was one of the first mods that I did and the only complaint I have is that it was expensive. You get what you pay for however.
Another option (might be my next), is an exhaust from Courtesy Nissan [if they still make them]. The fit and finish from what I remember of them is good and they use 2.5inch (sorry, us yanks) whereas most manufactures use 2.25. This can make a big difference if you have porting, cams, intake, headers, etc.
Hope that helps.
MervynG 08-18-2002, 05:12 PM Hi, thanx for reply,
Nope, it does help yet, but thanx anyway.
Q) Any idea on the quality? I haven't got to see one yet,
they are on order here, not kept in stock unless you wanna
buy it.
Q) okay, if I can't get a mandrel bent 2.25 inch sytem, would
a 2.5inch crush bent system give the same sort of performance.
Or would the mandrel bent system still be best?
Once again, replies will be appreciated,
Mervyn G
NismoGizmo 08-20-2002, 10:40 PM Mandrel bent would be the way to go.
Laminar flow is very important in most any exhaust system.
Smooth bends simply flow better (less turbulance).
Again, 2.5 should really be used for an SR20DE with some "heavy breathing" capabilities (i.e. Turbo [2.5 minimum], nitrous, N/A high-lift cams/porting, header, ECU, etc.)
2.25 ID should be great. 2.33 (on GReddy) would work fine too. 2.5 if you need the lower back pressure for higher velocity gas expulsion. Mandrel bends if you can.
NismoNx2000 08-21-2002, 09:10 AM Well, let me tell you from the experience that i have. I have the bosal brospeed single 3.5 inch tip Stainless steel muffler on my car with a 2.25" crush bent system. The muffler is nice and compact and the tip is just a half inch bigger then stock. With a resonator on there it sounds nice and deep and sounds nice and smooth when winding it out. I personally like the sound and performance it has provided. Im sure there are better systems out there. But its a straight through muffler, thats stainless steel, has nice construction and it wont kill your wallet. Not that its all that impressive, but with this setup and a warm air intake, and stock clutch i managed to run a 15.32 in the quarter with a pretty bad 2.368 60 foot time. Which means the exaust helped to open things up nicely up top. The muffler with custom cat-back piping cost me 200 bucks total with installation. Cant beat that.

MervynG 08-24-2002, 02:16 PM Hey John,
If I can get those times of my car which is pretty standard, I will be extremely happy. Did you run those times with a full house car or did you strip stuff off it?
---------
Okay, I have been to the local exhaust shop and they still insist on building up a 50mm (2 inch) system. They say that going bigger or tooo big will create back pressure on the system and also be tooo noisy. they don't do mandrel bent systems though but can get mandrel bent peices made elsewhere for an additional cost of about $9.00 for each bend. The stuff about back pressure was based on other cars that they have worked with and also based on a Honda that have. They haven't done a oroper exhaust system on a SR20, so I don't give a F!#$ about what they have to say now.
Okay, I am going to ask for something here and I do hope that you will be able to provide me with measurements.
I am going to going put on the 2.25 inch system on the car, one that will be designed on the car and get the mandrel bends.
I will really appreciate it if you could get me the size of the boxes to be used for the car. I am looking for the system to have a nice deep tone at low rev's and to lower in volume at higher rev's and
hopefully go silent at about 80-90 mph. Don't know if the sliencing
part can be done based on rev's.
So would you guys that experimented with exhaust systems please lend your experience and knowledge.
PS. I read some of the other posts but it refers to part no's but hte part no's are different down here.
One more question, Is the anyone that knows of a SR20 FSM that I can download of the net (or allow me to download a copy of ir from their website) or can somehow sell me a recorded copy of it? PS. I am in South Africa. (I want to learn more about these engines and the electronics so I can understand what you guys always refer to and understand what the mods are and for)
Thanks,
Mervyn G
