: Excellent air horn location
Toolapcfan 08-18-2002, 06:22 PM I just put my air horns in the SE-R that used to be in the XE and wanted to share the outcome so that anyone thinking of doing air horns might benefit from it. In the XE I had the horns mounted to a bracket that I attached to one of the radiator mount backets. The SE-R has all that EGR crap in the way, so I couldn't find a good location. Then I realize there is tons of room behind the airdam and plenty of places to mount brackets. So I mounted my bracket sandwiched between the vertical front clip brace that also has the hood release mechanism mounted to it. This allowed me to put the two air horns behind the dam, out of sight, and protected from the elements. I used the OEM horn bracket to mount the compressor, which is just above the bumper, but still behind the bumper cover and can't be seen through the grill.
Here's a pic of the compressor.

There was enough room that a person could mount a triple horn easily, and with a little coersion, a pair of duals or a 5 horn setup. There's even threaded holes on the bottom side of the front clip where a person could attach brackets. You can clearly see one of these holes rusting, just to the right of the horn. :)
Here's my inline fuse holder that I zip-tied to the throttle cable. I used the OEM horn wire to operate a relay which operates the air horn. The air horn pulls a lot more current than the OEM one.

blairellis 08-18-2002, 07:46 PM what exactly does that sound like? If you have a way to get mp3 or wav of it that would be cool. If not could you try to explain it? The install looks clean :)
SR20 Inside 08-18-2002, 07:55 PM its an air horn what else is it going to sound like, have you ever been to a junior basketball game, they always use em there :)

I wasnt sure if it was like that or like a semi trucks horns. I have never seen one on a car.
SR20 Inside 08-18-2002, 09:55 PM eh an air horn is an air horn, those semi horns are like 10 times bigger, havent you ever seen one up on top of em, they are damn big things
Bowlcut 08-18-2002, 10:04 PM i hate the wimpy se-r horns but at the same time the air horns are just as wimpy sounding just louder. Only reason stoping me from getting a set. Never liked the sound from anyone's ive heard. Now if i could get that one truck air horn we have at home working.... but spool is one problem with air horns, not immediate, can be made really quick with proper compressor and tubeing but that big one would be horrible.
Chrissy 08-18-2002, 10:14 PM If you think we have wimpy horns go listen to a 300zx horn. It's horrible!
Toolapcfan 08-18-2002, 11:02 PM It's a higher pitched sound. It's loud though. As far as compressor lag, there really isn't any with this set. My tubing is longer than it was when I had it in the XE and I can't tell a differece. You tap the horn and they're right there, nice and loud. I've scared the shit out of people daydreaming in the middle of an intersection. It's funny when people honk at me for something and I honk back, or someone lays on their whimpy horn and I drown them out with mine. :D Probably a nice compromise would be to get the Fiamm Freeway Blaster set. They have a lower tone, more like a train horn. They're loud as well, cheaper, and smaller, so mounting them isn't quite as much work. Fiamm makes a three horn set like this, but IIRC the third horn's length is in between the smaller one and the larger one in the set I have, so It wouldn't have much of a lower tone, only add a tone lower than the small horn, but higher than the longer horn in my set. If you wanted a nice lower tone you'd have to look for a set with a really long horn in it. I don't know where you'd put a large horn set though. Even the modest truck horns are a lot larger than these ones. These just fit behind the air dam without being exposed on the bottom side. Semi truck horns are like 2'-4' long, require a compressor the size of a T25 and probably run on 24 volts. Not to mention they can cost like $300-$500. Like I said though, If you got a Fiamm triple or five horn set with similar sized horns, you could fit them all behind the air dam. As long as the compressor was about the same size you could mount it where I put mine, but it's tight.
SR20 Inside 08-18-2002, 11:07 PM ahah isnt it illegal? I've always wanted tojust get an air horn in the little bottle so I could blast it at people that were being morons on the road but never looked hard enough. Plus my sister said in the old days her and her friends would do that but the cops said it was illegal to have. I guess the cops can't really tell whre it is coming from though ;). Any runins with the popos?
blairellis 08-18-2002, 11:19 PM question...it looks like you have a classic but i cant tell for sure. True?
Toolapcfan 08-18-2002, 11:25 PM You'd have to "check your state and local laws" about it being illegal. I've never even seen that warning in JC Whitney who sells ten thousand different horns, and they're really good about putting warnings like that on things that might be illegal, like blackouts, window tint, neons, lights, etc. I've never had the cops say anything to me, but I'm not running around blaring it at people while the cops are around either. :) Yeah blair, it's a '93 classic, just got it about two weeks ago up in Minneapolis. :D I need to put that in my sig. I spose.

Lucky you...you got a classic  Im still looking for one around here, AND i need to sell my car :( I like this idea *** bro...I think I would have WAY too much fun with it. What did you do for the relay? Couldnt you just use the wire coming from the horn button in the cabin to the airhorns or is that why you ran the new wire to the battery for the current draw...sorry wiring isnt my specialty.
Toolapcfan 08-18-2002, 11:51 PM I think some people have used the OEM horn wire that comes from the horn. However, the compressor pulls a lot more amps than the OEM horn. So to be safe and avoid an electrical fire, I used a relay, which routes power from the battery when the horn button is pushed. The relay is in a plastic baggie to keep it dry and is zip tied to the hood release cable, just above the radiator and under the rubber flap. Sounds like a hot spot, but I had it there on my XE for over a year and never had a problem. Everything looked good when I took it out. Wiring IS my specialty, so if you ever need he'p you just let me know. :) I looked at my FSM and there is a 10 amp fuse for the horn and the horn button operates a relay that routes that power to the horn. I'll have to check before I could make any safe judegment, but if the wiring going through that fuse and the wiring coming from the horn relay to the horn is of a decent size, a person could safely up the fuse size to cover a larger horn and not use a seperate relay and battery fused power at all. I'll check it out tomorrow and post a reply about it here. There used to be a sweet black '94 classic for sale down in Miami, but I'd bet it's sold by now. Check autotrader, that's where I found this'n. But check SE-R for the model instead of Sentra, it'll save you the time of looking through the hundreds of non SE-R classic Sentras for sale there. You'll likely only find a few, and I mean less than 5, SE-R's in a list of hundreds of Sentras if you pick Sentra for the model.
Pretty White 08-19-2002, 02:00 AM Here I am thinking he is talking about putting the filter behind the headlight of something. Dumb me!:(

here's a perfect arguement for having the forum host the pictures... this way they'll always be here. argh
