Is it in the hose going to the valve cover on the top left?
If it is that one, there's a metal clip thing around the hose and I can't see what I should do to remove it, other than bend the clip and bend it back afterwards.

Yes that is the correct one. You should only need a vise grip or channel locks to squeeze the clip and slide it back on the hose. At least that's the way my motor was (B14)

Okay, so I pulled the hose off tonight with the engine running and there was suction from the hose. But where's the filter? The hose was connected to a threaded metal part that sticks out of the valve cover (and looks like it's a permanent part). There doesn't appear to be a valve between that part that sticks out and the hose. Nothing looks like the new grey and black plastic PCV valve that I just bought.
What's up???

Sounds to me like you may have bought the wrong PCV valve. The replacement should replace that entire little metal piece that the hose attaches to. You have to unthread it from the VC and thread in the new one. Reattach hose and you are done.

dunno what it does when it's bad, but for less than $10, IIRC, it's worth changing.

Way I see it... $10 of preventive maintainence.... Can't hurt to change it out before there is a problem.
