Is there some guide on how to properly use a volt meter on anything car related, because I have several things I need to check but dont know how to set it properly. Any links or advice woukld be appreciated.

I'd hop on the website for the manufacturer of your meter... any multi-meter should come with a instruction manual that will cover basic electrical troubleshooting & proper/safe use of the tool. I have an OTC meter currently and it came with a fairly thick book. I know my previous models from Snap On and Fluke also came with manuals.
