: Tire Recommended?
LikeTheMovies 10-17-2008, 02:25 AM I am looking for some tires that I am going to be using for summer only.
I'm going with a 16x7 wheel on a 99 sentra and I'm looking for the best tire for the price for them. They will get some abuse such as track days and such also.
Was thinking something like 225/45/16 KDW's. What would you guys recommend or maybe something that will last a little longer then those? Thanks
Racerx04 10-17-2008, 05:31 AM I would go with the Yokohama Avid V4s there the best for your buck and they are great for all around tires. Trust me on that.
LikeTheMovies 10-17-2008, 02:06 PM lol I can't find those in a 16 on there site. i looked through 225-205 and 50-45
xCONWRATHx 10-17-2008, 09:43 PM Falken Azenis in a 215-45-16
LikeTheMovies 10-17-2008, 10:28 PM wear to fast for me
featherweight13 10-19-2008, 06:10 AM You want tires that will take track day abuse but complain about RT615s wearing too fast? You need one or the other. The RT615 is terrible for the track anyway since they can't take the heat and get greasy.
Bridgestone RE01R in 205/45R16 or if you feel like gambling (pretty sure it will do well) try out the brand new Kumho Ecsta XS in 215/45R16.
LikeTheMovies 10-19-2008, 03:30 PM I drive a lot, I want something that will hold up on track days but will be good for long drives on the streets.

Thanks for the question. For size you are going to want to look at the 205/40R16 (http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/searchTiresByVehicleAndSize.do?yr=1999&ar=40&rd=16&vid=006853&sw=false&cs=205) or the 205/45R16 (http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/searchTiresByVehicleAndSize.do?yr=1999&ar=45&rd=16&vid=006853&sw=false&cs=205).
Featherweight13 is correct. When it comes to tires life and performance are trade-offs. The more performance you get the shorter the life and the more life you get the less grip and performance the tire will have. Based on your wants and needs I would suggest looking at the Nitto Neo Gen. These are a summer high performance tire that are built with a softer rubber compound for increased performance when compared to other high performance summer tires. They won't handle the track as well as the Falken RT615 or Kumho MX but they will outlast them. I ran these on my Oz lancer and absolutely loved them. They are also pretty affordable so if you are rough on them replacing them won't hurt your pocket too much.
LikeTheMovies 10-20-2008, 08:28 PM Ok I'm not looking for something thats gonna last me 50k miles haha More the long the lines of 2-3 summers. Maybe that'll help more. And why would I want to go with 205 just curious and I'd like to stay about 45 or 50

My guess is the Neo Gen would last you about 25-36K depending on how hard you drive them. They have a 280 tread rating and when I drove them here in AZ I think I got about 30K or so out of them, they probably had a few thousand miles left on them when I sold the car and although I drove them pretty hard, I did not take them to the track.
When you replace your tires you have to maintain the same overall diameter of the original tire to maintain the correct speedometer readings and to keep the tire from rubbing.
Here is a Tire size calculator (http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/brochure/info/tmpInfoTireMath.jsp). Put in your original tire size and then the size you are wanting and it will tell you the difference between the two. Here is a link to the sizes we suggest for the Sentra SE model. LikeTheMovies 10-21-2008, 12:04 AM so you think like 215 or 225 would have to much overhang off the rim? maybe cause the sidewall to roll on sharp turns? or would it not effect it that much. I'm kinda leaning towards the kdw's actually maybe the 205s instead of the 225s though lol

Its a little more complicated than that. I'll do my best to explain. First, the tire needs to be the correct overall diameter for your vehicle. Second, it needs to be the proper width for the wheel you are using. That will seem easy enough but then you have to understand how tires are sized.
Tires are stated in Metric sizes and Standard sizes. If we look at the Metric size 205/45R16. The first number (205) is the width of the tire in millimeters. The second number (45) is what's called the aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is the actually a percentage of the width. In this case the side wall is 45% of 205. The last number is the obviously the wheel diameter that the tire fits.
With that said, a 225/45R16 would be taller than a 205/45R16, If you wanted to go with a wider tire (as long as your wheel was approved for it) you would have to drop down the aspect ratio to maintain the correct overall diameter of your original tire.
BFG tires are excellent tires. BFG tires are manufactured by michelin and Michelin cuts no corners on their tires. The KDW could be a great tire for you for summer driving. You may even get a few more miles out of them over the Neo Gen but it will depend on how you drive.
-Hope this helps explain it a little better. - Travis
LikeTheMovies 10-21-2008, 10:35 PM yeah it does, so say i went 215, I'd have to go 40 to keep the ratio right.
Would you happen to know how many millimeters can a 7" rim hold

Exactly.
If you have the GXE or GLE your Sentra should have come stock with 175/65R14's. These are about 6.89" wide and 22.96" tall. If you went with a 215/40R16 you would be going to a tire that is about 8.46" wide and 22.77" tall. I say about because tires are like shoes, a size 10 Nike fits your foot different than a size 10 Addidas. Tires are the same way. Using the Tire Size Calculator can give you a pretty good idea of the actual size though.
According to my guide you can go up to a 215 on a 7" wide wheel so If you wanted to you could also go with the 215/40R16 Tire (http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/searchTiresBySize.do?sw=false&cs=215&ar=40&rd=16) size. :biggthump To be safe, with the extra tire width aim for a wheel with an offset between 38-42mm. That should keep the tire away from both the suspension components and the fenders.
Thank you for all the great questions.
LikeTheMovies 10-22-2008, 12:33 PM thanks a lot, rims i'm looking at are 16x7 with 40 mm offset. thanks for the help.

Both the g-Force Sport and the Ziex ZE-512 are great options. You can expect more life and better wet traction out of the 512s but the g-Force Sport is going to have better dry handling. Another great option to consider is the Nitto NT450. It's in the middle between the two. The 450 has a little softer rubber compound compared to the 512 and g-Force Sport but still has great wet traction. Here's a link with some additional information.
