Okay. My car is having issues again. It should be an easy fix but I'm hoping for some techie gurus to give their two cents also. Here is my dilemma:

I have a hole (a big one) in my flex pipe. The leak is causing a confused EGR and a lot of annoying sound. I need to fix it.

By December, I hope to have a Gen5 Hotsot header and I'm hoping to have the EGR stuff removed if I can get a new ECU by then. What is the best way to get the Flex Pipe fixed/replaced with these near future upgrades in mind?

Do I just get a straight pipe installed to replace it? If so, what diameter? Does it need some flexibility (ie. ball joints)? What kind of changes need to be made to get ready for the header if any?

Well, as always, I really appreciate everyone's help.

Dont they make some sort of sealant for exhaust leaks that temporarily fixes it, or at least helps. Although im not sure if you could use this on a flew pipe, plus the hole could be to big.

Well, I have tried to patch it twice. but the "cast" just disintegrates after a few days because it flexes so much...

Auto Zone makes a good patch that comes with the cotton stuff/ sealant /2 metal braces/ and a metal mesh screen. It worked on my car for 3 months. It held thru the rain too. Good luck! That fiberglass crap doesnt work either!!!

Okay. It seems pretty unanimous that I should just patch it for now. What will be the best application when I install the header and I replace the patched up flex pipe? Should I use a straight pipe or is the flexibility preferred?

why do you need to repair the flex pipe after you get the new header? The new header has a flex pipe. And if you where planning on replacing the flex pipe on the new header, why would u do that?

Okay. I didn't know that a new flex pipe comes with the header. Thank you.

I guess that solves it. I might have to scrounge up the money for the header sooner than I planned and we'll forget the repair completely...

similar situation... i had the $tillen header that leaked on the flex pipe. i tried one of those wraps, but it didn't hold that long. i once downshifted from 3rd to 2nd and the end of the flex pipe broke away from the pipe. i could see the pipe hanging out in the middle of the car. i just put i back in place and bought a new flex pipe from $tillen for about $30. welded back on, but didn't last long either. i ended up getting the whole 4-1 header. i have the primary from the 1st gen header sitting in the garage. damn, i realized i just paid $450 for my header. :(

i suggest some es mm inserts (for the torque mounts). they'll se-riously reduce stress on the flex section of your new secondary pipe, and they're only ~$35.
cheap insurance.
