: Testing the Fuel Pressure Regulator??
SENTRASER 08-20-2002, 11:17 PM Hey guys, I cant figure out how to test the FPR, I put a "T" imbetween the return line for the gas and put a gauge on there, it didn't do anything. Then I put it on the line going INTO the FPR and it showed 50lb's. Any ideas? Please help!

Ryan,
as per FSM you check only on the line from the fuel filter to the fuel rail. You should initially release the fuel pressure before running the tests (as when you change the fuel filter).
You perform 2 checks BOTH AT IDLE.
1. With the FPR vacuum hose (to intake manifold) CONNECTED: reading should be ~ 36psi.
2. With the FPR vacuum hose (to intake manifold) ***-CONNECTED: reading should be ~ 43psi.
Then there is a 3rd test involving a Variable Vacuum Source.
You leave the gauge wehere it is, connect a VVS thingy to the vaccum hose and puld the intake maniffold with a rubber cup where the vacuum hose would be.
Start the engine and apply vaccum with the VVS. Fuel pressure should DECREASE as vacuum increases.

SENTRASER 08-21-2002, 02:12 PM I tested between the FPR and the and the filter and it was at 50 psi! This was with the vacume line hooked up! Is my FPR messed up? I'll swap it out and see what the readings are, I have an extra one.

hpro123 08-22-2002, 08:47 AM I believe it is messed up. 36 to 50 is wayyyy off!
Still, if the FPR maintains a 50% higher pressure than normal, your car should run very rich. Do you have any indication of such a condition?
Keep us posted on teh results with the alternate FPR.

Well, I was testing the wrong line before, I was testing the line that hooks to the FPR itself...although I did test the line going from the fuel filter to the rail, and it didn't show anything on my gauge. I just installed the new(used)FPR, and it works beautifuly, just like the FSM says it should work! Its right at 36psi. My car is still missing out though. :( Thanks for your help, if you have any other suggestions why it would miss out, please suggest. :)

I a not really that good! :-))
What is the apaprent problem with your car?
Chris
SENTRASER 08-24-2002, 05:00 PM The car is missing out throughout the RPM band, esspecially at low RPM's. I have an MSD ignition running my stock coil. I've replaced the cap/rotor/wires and coil. The only thing I haven't replaced is the distributor.

does this mean likes its surging? does the power come on then feel like it falls off alittle, then comes back again? how about part throttle, does it happen more at part throttle?

Theres no loss in power, from what I can tell. And it happens at higher RPMS than idle, but not as bad...no power surges.

hpro123 08-26-2002, 04:18 AM Ryan,
you told us everything that "missing out" is not.
You still have not described what the problem IS. Or at least I have not been able to figure it out.

"missing out" could be described as mis-firing. I dont know how elce to describe it. There is some ignition problem making it so it doesn't have a nice smooth idle. I do have cams, but they're supposed to be new billets and based off the stock cam, so they should have a nice idle. Also, when I'm going down hill, I can feel some slight surges in 4th gear going about 40.
