I have been falling down a lot lately and have decided to get a helmet. What do you guys suggest and where is a good place to go get one (DFW/Austin/Houston places)?

I was looking for SA95 or 2000 since I will start autocrossing soon, and I might need one for the drag strip once my Sentra is done. Would an M95 or M2000 helmet be sufficient if I don't do any road track events? When exactly is an SA rating required, i.e. what sort of events?

Thanks for your help.

SA means Special Application as opposed to M being Motorcycle.

Most autocross and track days/schools allow you to use a Snell M-rated helmet. Road racing sanctioning bodies demand SA-rated helmets, mainly because of roll cage proximity and neck protection. You'll have to check with event organizers as to their helmet requirements.

If you decide to get a motorcycle skid lid, just about any motorcycle shop will carry a selection of Arai, Shoei, HJC and others. Check out denniskirk.com for a good list of M-rated helmets.

Summit and Pro-Am carry Simpson gear. Shoei supposedly makes SA helmets but I've not found any.

I prefer helmets with removable liners and quick-change visors. Expect to pay $200 to $300 for a good helmet.

Hey Tommy... Doesn't your car have to be a 13 second car before you buy a helmet? ;)

Thanks for the replies everyone. I really just wanted to see if anybody had a good shop recommendation, and so I posted here in the TX forum. I don't want to buy online because I really would rather try the helmet on before I bought one.

I also just wanted to see if I could get away with getting an M rated helmet for just autocross and drag strip stuff and perhaps a lapping event. SA helmets are quite a bit more than M helmets.

I found no Shoei SA helmets. I like those but could only find M helmets.

Ben, with what should be about 240whp, I think I can get into the 13's if I remember how to drive. :)
