: Stainless resonator needed
eric96ser 08-22-2002, 11:14 AM My Courtesy exhaust is no longer cutting it. Its way too loud. Does anyone know of a good stainless steel resonator? I heard Magnaflow makes one, but their website doesn't show one. I'm tired of my car sounding like ass when I drive it hard. I guess those 5+ weeks of driving a stock SR20 car have soften me up. I would put the stock cat back on, but I was told the S3s will not like the increased back pressure.
NismoPC 08-22-2002, 11:32 AM I believe Walker is one of the only companies out there that provides a glasspack style muffler out of stainless steel.
Another idea:
I had the shop weld a flange on both ends of my Thrush glasspack so that if and when it goes bad, I can just pull it out have another one with welded flanges put back in. No cutting or destruction of the cat-back stainless piping to the muffler.:D

Magnaflow has a 2.5 inchX4inchX18aprox long but it is not stainless. It does have a lifetime warranty and should be pretty quite. As far as stainless I have no idea but you don't see it under the car anyway.
eric96ser 08-22-2002, 12:09 PM You you have a part number or anything?

Part #10426 here is a link. (http://www.magnaflow.com/03cat-back/03aluminized/03aluminizedround.htm)
Also, Walker/dynomax has one called the Bullet. Here is another link. (http://www.dynomax.com/mufflers.stm)
I have a magnaflow sitting at a shop ready to get it installed on my car but the stupid shop is so poorly run I can't get an appointment or even get them to answer the phone. I have had a hard time finding a local company who sells Magnaflow other then this shop. I found the Dynomax/Bullet at several places for $44. I do think the Magnaflow is a quiter piece because it is a real muffler and not a "Race Only" item. Several places sell Maganflow on the internet of course. Both are perforated core. Good luck.
Edit: I was just looking to find a internet site to buy a Magnaflow and I found this site that actually sells a stainless 2.5 inch version of the above Muffler. Part number 14416 Link (http://www.promuffler.com/round__stainless.htm)

Has nothing to do with looks.
It's because stainless will last longer and not rust out like the $14.99 - $19.99 glasspacks we all use.

I'd really like to know if the 6" round would fit in the resonator location. I think it would sound really good, as long as it wasn't hitting anything.
Eric, what muffler are you using? Is it the courtesy muffler? I have the courtesy b-pipe with its short resonator, but a 18" long 2.5" ultra-flo. Its not loud (NismoPC has heard it). I don't remember if it was on when I came to your wedding, but we weren't doing car stuff anyway.

No way it will. Only 4" will fit and even then it has to hang down quite a bit lower than stock.

I am so happy now. I just broke ties with the stupid people who did my first 2.5 inch exhaust so now I can get my exhaust fixed by someone else. The one they did was with no resonator (thier mistake) and a 18 inch rear Magnaflow. It made 12whp with the VE I have. I have found another shop that will fix the part over the axle for a fair price. He just measured on my b14 and said the 4 inch resonator will fit but just barely. I will probably get the bullet also. How do you like the bullet/magnaflow combination?

Well, that answers that question. I would get the 4" round 22" long 2.5" ID magnaflow as a resontaor then (part 10436). It is aluminized instead of stainless, but just paint the weld areas and it should last a while.
98sr20ve 08-22-2002, 04:02 PM Magnaflow has a lifetime warranty on thier mufflers just so everyone knows. For some reason it is real hard to find the magnaflow product in my area. I just ordered a Bullet Muffler from a local store.

I'm using the megaphone equiped Courtesy muffler. We did car stuff, but that was after you left. Is there any way you can make a recording of what your car sounds like? I'm looking for almost stock levels. A little louder is okay, mine is way too loud.

And I concur! It is quite civil. Very nice tone.
Mine is/was actually louder, but I have found one of the problems. The flex-pipe I had welded in the secondaries had a pinhole leak on both ends of the flex. Those were welded up last Friday, and the exhaust seems to be quieter. Probably just the fact that the inside cabin resonance was lowered drastically after the two pinholes were fizxed. I still have an annoying whistle on acceleration. It might be the actual flex-pipe itself. Oh well!
NismoPC 08-22-2002, 10:56 PM Hmm? Double post!
eric96ser 08-22-2002, 11:00 PM I'll bring the digital camera to work with me, and record the sound inside the car tomorrow.

I can record it while not moving and revving it in neutral. Right now if I drive it you'll hear the wheel bearing noise over any exhaust note. I don't know when I'll be able to fix that.
98sr20ve 08-23-2002, 04:57 PM I just got the Dynomax Bullet muffler/resonator. It is small and ugly. Looks nothing like the nice pretty one on the web site. Who really cares I guess. I really wanted to tell you that (to me) the proper way to install this thing would be to slide the pipes into the muffler NOT butt weld the pipes to the outside flange. There is a step-down inside the muffler that reduces to 2.4 inches which is the I.D. of a 2.5 O.D. pipe. If you slide the pipes inside it should be one continuous 2.4 I.D. pipe. Just thought I would let you know.

I put my complete stock exhaust back on manifold to muffler. The car is so choked off right now it doesn't even run right let alone perform like it did even with the cracked to shit AEBS header and megaLOUD courtesy exhaust that was on previously. I ordered a dynomax ultraflow from Summit Racing. The price was good and shipping is always fast. I will be installing it with my courtesy B-pipe next week. I couldn't find anyplace reliable that sold Magnaflow or thats what I would have bought.
For a resonator, a friend of mine used a Borla XR1 muffler one his 200+whp Si. With a Mugen muffler and it was resonably quiet until he put his foot in it. All of Borla's stuff is stainless.

I lost 12 whp (159-171) when I took the 2.5 inch off and put the stock back on. This was on my VE with a messed up TPS sensor never reading WOT. it would probably be a little more of a loss now.
Soupaflie 08-23-2002, 10:29 PM I believe it Steve. I stand behind my friends near stock B14 with my leg near the exhaust. I can feel a slight pulse but mostly just like a breeze blowing past my leg. Now I stand behind my car with JWT C2 cams, stock ex manifold, and stock exhaust. I can physically feel the pulses against my leg. It is a night and day difference how much air my car moves at idle compared to a near stock SE-R.
I ran it in the quarter mile and lost 3mph. Its that much of a loss of power. Hopefully soon I can order the new header since I will have my new exhaust next week.
