I've seen many of threads about this and im wondering what exactly is it and what exactly does it feel like? I have a 94 low port and i don't know what it is im kinda curious, i hear that it occurs mostly with 91-93's and is it fixable? Didn't the suits in Japan figure it out by the 2nd year of production? sheesh LOL

feel like? Hmm, if you put the car in 5th and mash the gas pedal, the stick just pops out (its VERY noticible) and the engine RPMs rev up. Basically the 5th gear shift fork was a weak design, thats why on the 95+ cars they modified it. I cant explain how some guys go over 100K and dont get it, when i got mine at like 50K. :( I have had it for a few years, and one day i get a new tranny...

Although, i have a 91 second owner and have 0 fithgear pop out around 140k miles. The origional onwer was to tall to rest his hand on the shifter (thats what he told me) and i hardly never touch the shifter while driving.

There is a recent thread on this subject at nissanforums.com.

Trans redesign affected '94 and later, not '95. My '94 has not experienced pop-out but it has only 80k miles on it.

sweet then i got lucky to find a 94 classic with no 5th gear popout ( obviously ), my original sr20de died at 135k and i had never had that happen to me, i was just curious since i heard alot about it, and also are all 94's lowport? i hear that some 94's made in 93 were highport, just curious ( once again ) lol

Though there was a redesign in '94, my '94 classic still got it around 75,000. I never rested my hand on the shifter, nor did I beat the snot out of the car. It happened the first time just driving down the interstate at 75 with the cruise on, and out it popped. Scared me to death as the revs skyrocketted. Over the next several months it got so bad that it wouldn't even go into 5th anymore. Instead of fixing it at a dealer (total cost, close to $1200 with new clutch), I bought a '95 tranny, put in a new clutch and 8 lb flywheel. Awesome now!!
There are no warnings if your car will have it or not. It will just happen.

Life without 5th isnt bad.

I would advise to stay away from Mobil 1 GL-5 synthetic Gear fluid.
Thats when mine started acting up. :(
Oh well...................life goes on.;) :D

SmoothDaddyFig has a '94 with a 5th gear popout...explain that ;)

It IS possible that not EVERY single 91-94 SE-R was affected by this. I have a 91 with 166k miles, and no 5th gear popout. I guess its the luck of the draw.

That is so true, but yet unexplainable. From what i have heard, some guys had it as low as 5K and guys like you have over 160K and no problems. Go figure. Mine started on a road trip with 2 buddies and a car full of skis and everything else. Going up a hill, she popped out. Been like that ever since. I miss my 5th, although i dont drive the SE-R everyday anymore, but on the 2-3 hour trips to the road coarses, its sucks. Yeah, 4th on the highway rocks, but getting 18-20 MPG doesnt! Oh well, one day....
