: 98 tranny question
Ok, here goes. I am looking to get a 98 SE tranny for my 92 SE-R. I have 2 options, and i am not sure on one of them. since my 92 tranny sucks ass (5th gear popout), can i buy the 98 NON LSD tranny, swap in my LSD and go from there? I hear there may be an issue with an axle being too long or short? Has anyone tried this or does anyone have any idea?
Any help is appreciated.
thanks
98SERwTricks 08-23-2002, 11:21 PM the LSD will not fit in the 98 tranny case or else all us 98 owners would have it... You're gonna have to a. Get a 95-97 tranny or b. fix the 5th gear popout
I guess it all depends on cost... Good luck!
scmser 08-23-2002, 11:38 PM If your brave, you can do it yourself. My friend and I have done two so far. It can be done by mere mortals. Fifth gear is the easiest gear to fix. Remove the tranny, open the case, pop off some clips, a shaft bearing, some shift forks and hardware, swap fifth gear and synchros, install w/new hardware and forks, RTV the case, reinstall in car. The procedure has been finished in one long day.
IMO, if you have the cash for a new tranny, buy one. If not, go for it.

Are you saying you have fixed the fifth gear pop-out OR swaped the 98 stuff into a classic tranny.
I know if you kept the 98 tranny you would need to use the VSLD case. Not saying it would work, but I know you need the bigger case for the VSLD.
scmser 08-24-2002, 09:41 AM I'm saying if he has the money for a used VLSD tranny, go that route. If you don't, then your only other options are to have a four speed or fix it yourself. If you bought a new tranny, then you have a great learning tool in the form of a spare tranny.

Ok, put cant i use my 92 case and put in on the 98? this way, i have a 98 tranny with an LSD. ANyone?
NismoNx2000 08-26-2002, 09:27 AM If i were you, i would just buy a b14 tranny from 95-97. You can probably pick one up for around 350 to 500 beans. I know jason garrett young sells trannies. Check out his site www.jgycustoms.com I also know he had for sale a cryo treated tranny for like 500 bucks. I was having problems getting my car into random gears, so i bought a 95 b14 tranny for 450 bucks. I guess it all comes down to how much you want to spend, and how emotionally attached you are to your current tranny. :D
Whats involved with putting the 95-97 tranny in a 92? Dont you have to change the speedo pinion or something like that?
eric96ser 08-26-2002, 09:49 AM Heer (pun intended) you go tranny swap (http://heer.home.mindspring.com/autos/autos7.html)
scmser 08-26-2002, 05:50 PM The hole Heer writes about is for the Crank Angle Sensor that's on the later models. Classics don't have Crank A.S.
