Does anybody have any info on this motor I picked one up today from All Japanese Engines the code on the head says 53j 1r. It is and obd1 motor highport. The valve cover is the champgne color with the black line in the middle. It also has the tubular headers. After looking over the motor there is somethings that a standard jspec sr20 doesnt have. I would really like to know the compression of this motor and if it is some type of special motor or something like that.

53J 2R - Normal pistons, highport, egrless and gold/black Valve cover

My motor has the same code as yours "53J 1R", it's a JDM Highport 10:1 CR, egr-less, flat Piston tops. I don't know what the 1R vs. 2R means, but you and I have the same codes. Maybe the 1R indicates the higher compression motor. Red injectors, and I am absolutely positive this is a 10:1 JDM CR motor because Dave Coleman bought it and swapped it into my car when he blew the head gasket at the track next to last SCC installment. Dave swapped in his Hotshot header, added EGR crap for CA emissions, swapped over the UD pulleys, etc.

Special? Well, stock sometimes you will see about a +5 bump in hp listed depending on the car, mostly due to the tubular headers IIRC than the difference between 10:1 CR and 9.5:1 of the USDM motor it replaced.
(53J V2 1R USDM Silver Valve Cover Highport 9.5:1 Red Injectors EGR OBD-1 1993). As for stuff it has that "standard" JDM motor does not, you'd have to be more specific.

This is what it looked like right off the pallet - the VC looks more champagne in reality than in these pics where it looks a little more silver:

You can see the color of the VC here from when I put on the SSAC header, the hotshot cracked for the nth time so I replaced it:

Thanks You, All I really wanted to know is the compression.
and how well did this motor run for you. I will have it swapped in the car and running today. Mods being weapon r headers, 2.5" start pipe to a magnaflow muffler, wai, pullies, and act hdpp/ b15 clutch disk. I hope it runs as hard as my last motor did.

my spare engine looks just like the ones in the pics but it has the egr stuff? maybe its just a swapped valve cover?

The motor runs great, I have very similar mods to yours. I drove it 3000 miles hard XC, and put about another 8-10k on it since. It has a JWT ECU so it may have a slightly more aggressive tune for the stock cam profile. SSAC header 2.5" into full 2.5" exhaust - HFC, Magna resonator and muffler.

Car when loaded with 2 people and all our junk would pull 100 mph uphill in 4th gear at 6500 feet, that's pretty strong for bolts-ons. It will pull up to 7k nicely, will run to 7800 rpm cutoff but I rarely go there because not making any addition power at 7500 rpm, and valvetrain I have been told starts to float a bit with stock retainers and springs - Idk for sure. Have some new JWT cams in the box haven't put in yet mostly due to classing issues in autox.

Pretty much all or most my info on the car is here:
Project SE-R Site Menu (http://homepage.mac.com/stracy01/projectb13/Menu160.html)

Recently upgraded the clutch, too, JWT vs. a very worn out centerforce.

ok the car is up and running. i couldnt be happier with the motor, this thing idles perfect and it runs hard. i am going to try and compare standard 9.5:1 cams to the cams in my 10:1. to see if they are more aggresive then the 9.5:1. i hope this will finally prove that these motors are well worth it.

thats sounds to me to be a usdm sr20 they come with the same valve cover, and have egr.

Can't believe I screwed this up, mine is a 53J 1L - not 1R.

However still sounds like my JDM donor motor before the EGR add. Dave retrofitted PC equipment to pass CA emissions.

Mine's not a USDM motor unless someone crated it, shipped it to Japan, and Coleman bought it back to here ;) What is looks like now is a little different than when it came out off the pallet.

It also came out of a car that had an AT, there was absolutely no clutch dust at all and it had not been cleaned.

theres rumors of some tuned sr20de motors from autech or sumn like that. do some research. also google would help.

Remember mine didn't have EGR until it was added, and sure someone could have easily swapped the VC, or just added the EGR. The non-EGR tubular headers IIRC are a dead giveaway, so if your spare had OEM exhaust mani with EGR, that's probably a USDM motor.

The flat top pistons are the dead giveaway for an OEM motor for 10:1 in this vintage of highport early 1990's SR's.
