Do energy suspension shift bushings go at the transmission end or the shifter end of the linkage? I got under the car yesterday and it didn't look like the bushing would fit at the transmission end. Can anyone give me any install help?

Transmission end. The upper of the two shifter arms has a round, one-piece rubber bushing. Pry it out, and the two halves of the ES bushing sandwich in there.

Yeah, I thought I was going to have problems installing it, but it's very easy to spot if you just follow the shift arms. It's held on by a 14MM bolt. :D

Thanks for the help. I will crawl under tomorrow and install the new bushing.

I just did it today, easy. Nice feel. I un-bolted the bracket too. That makes three bolts. One 14mm two 12 mm. Some weird angles, but relatively easy, and self evident.

I put it in and can't tell any difference at all. I think that it was a waste of time and money.

Hmm...strange. You're one of the only people that I know of that has done the mod that feels the way you do. Oh well. ;)

I'm doing this install this weekend... I've got the SS in but I can't get the shifter bushing installed. I've unbolted the 14mm nut/bolt... and the two 12mm nuts on back (top side) of the support plate. I still can't get enough room to remove the bushings. The shifter linkage arm is in the way on the drivers side... and the engine mount is in the way on the passenger side.

I'm going to be doing the engine mounts Monday (Football Sunday tomorrow... yes I'm lazy)... so this isn't REALLY a problem. I'll have the mount out so I'll have more room. I just want to know how the heck you guys who didn't replace the mount were able to get the bushing out?

I didnt feel any difference either. I also installed the tranny mount insets and the front mount. With the S4 cams the car shakes at idle. Even the hood shakes!

Ok, got it all in... damn I'm glad I'm done with this project. Just gotta re-adjust the new downpipe tomorrow. I think I either left off the gasket or it's not quite lined up right... it sounds like I have a small exhaust leak up there. I can't imagine this is just the engine mount causing the extra noise. Oh well, at least everything else is perfect now. Still the noise is pretty cool... it doesn't sound like a Cesna like my old broken DP did. The new downpipe sounds more like a nice exhaust... if a little buzzy. Still, I think I'll fix it ASAP. =)

In case anyone reads this thread and has the same problem I had getting the Shifter bushing out... I found I had to unscrew the engine mount screw so that it was flush with the bolt. Then I was able to move the linkage down far enough that I could saw off the edges of the old bushing on one side... the old bushing just pushes out after that. Then slide the 2 sides of the new one in and bolt it back up. Don't forget to re-screw in the engine mount screw.

One of the other things I found when I was installing the SS is that it's easy to over tighten it to the control rod. If it's overly tight the shifter will feel real stiff when you're in the car. (Don't ask me how I know this.) I tightened it until there was no side to side movement in the bolt and then tightened it a little more (not much). I then checked it in the car before I covered everything back up (again). Another thing I tried was I used some of the grease supplied for the shifter ball and put that into the base of the shifter... covered the bolt with it and before I slide it in. It's very smooth now. =)

well when i first installed my s/s, i overly tightened the bolt and it hardly moved so i loosened it..too much. the other day the nut fell off and i was so damn lucky i even made it home. we didn't have a bolt like the one that is one the stock shifter and the old bolt wouldn't fit bc the opening on my s/s was alot smaller. so we just used a normal bolt and i guess thats not such a good idea. i tightened the nut as much as i could and a week later it had loosened up again. i'm either going to buy something to make sure that nut doesn't move or try finding the correct bolt.

Hmmm...

I guess some Loctite would work well here. When it was still a little loose I could sit in the car, move the shifter back and forth, and hear the bolt moving (clanging). Did you notice anything like that before it fell off? I guess I'll probably check everything this weekend just to make sure.

katana200sx,,

i had the same problem with the nut falling off. I just went to the home depot and got the same size nut but at the end of the nut it had nylon. They're called nylon lock nuts or something like that. So far this nut has stayed on longer than all the others i've tried about 3 months i think.

Since the one provided by SMC is a nylon lock nut and it can still fall off... why not just use a little super glue to really lock the nut on? If I'd know this was a problem I would of done that from that start... oh well. Hopefully mine's on tight enough that it won't fall off.

well the s/s i got was a topspeed and it didnt come with a nut so the factory nut i used fell off after a while. my guess is that if u use a nylon lock nut, make sure not to overtighten at first so you wont have to loosen it. this will have minimal wear on the nylon and it'll grip better.

i'm not an expert on this but i'm just trying to help

Yep, I thought of that too on my 4th time removing the nut... lol.
