: Starter?

What is the failure mode for high port (92 SE-R) starters?
Do they crap out but still spin freely so you can at least push start the car. Or can they lock up causing drag or a full stop situation?
I've had my car down for a few days with a full ES front suspension install. Now it won't start. Tried jumping but no go. I have noticed the ground wire up front passanger side, the one that's in the alternator harness got WAY hot after several attempts to get it going.
Any ideas guys?

Mine just straight up died, no warnig. At least it was in my driveway. I was able to roll down the driveway, and get the car to start. Take the starter off and get it tested at AutoZone or any other parts store.

Does the starter make any noise at all? The noise it makes will usually tell you what is wrong.

For instance, mine started to click repeatedly without engaging. I found out after trying THREE different starter motors that I had a simple short. The ground from the neg. battery terminal to the engine block had corroded and come apart. A $1 brass connector fixed it.

The starter will never die with the gear engaged. There will be no drag on the engine, and you can pop-start it by pushing or coasting down a hill (while I was fixing mine, I got really good at pop-starting it alone).

Anyways...long story short, check your electrical connections before pulling the starter. You may be really happy you did later.

ok, im ***** sound stupid but can you tell me how to get my car to start with the whole pop starting thing. my starter died on me a day ago, but i still need a car to drive. i didnt know i could still start it without the starter working!!

so basically how do i do it? do i leave it in neutral and roll it, then turn the key? could someone just quickly tell me how its done without fucking up the car... appreciate it alot :D

get the car rolling, depress the clutch, put in 1st gear, hold the gas, pop the clutch. Should start right up....make sure you have the key in the "on" position.

1st gear works, but if you can get a good roll, 2nd gear is better (and safer on the tranny). Reverse is also good.

In reverse you would be rolling backwards of course...

That was exactly my concern.

BTW my starter is fine.
Still squeals like it always did.

Damn Starters..The other day my starter, started acting up again...I had it replaced like four months ago..Whats happening is the starter is staying on after I turn the car on it still wants to keep turning over..(It makes that grinding noise that it makes when you accidently turn the key on again after you already ahd the car on) It keeps getting longer to.. When it first started the other day it wasnt bad it stopped right away now its getting longer and longer... And if I turn the key off it still wants to keep the car running??? And the running sound is like a car would make when turning it over and it wont start... I have no idea what the hell is going on.. I think it might be cause after my turbo install we had problems with the injectors they flooded the car with gas and we kept trying to start it till we figured out why... But the only way to safely start the car is to pop it in 2nd or reverse.. I dont know..Its dishearting cause I wanted to beat up on some 8 cyls this weekend:D.. Any suggestions would be greatly appericated thanks..

holy crap bro, i thought i needed a new starter. you might aswell get a better one i guess cause its just ***** burn itself out eventually like that. from what ive gathered, a starter is not meant to be in use more than a few seconds.....afterthat, it starts to get real hot and burn up.

ok, so now im ***** attempt the second gear thing, i didnt think it felt too good doing it in first, also i have to rev it up a bit before i start driving or it stalls. hopefully ill get a replacement soon, there are some places i just cant get the room i need for a good rollin start.....its getting annoying now

Just replaced Alex's starter for the 2nd time last night in a week!...

First:
Starter dies, I have a used replacement, we install it in about an hour and all is well.

Friday I get a call at work "Dude my car won't start again, I got under it and that solenoid thing is just hanging there!" AHHHHHH

$130 at autzone and a while last night (he broke something on his air box, we adjusted his timing and took lots of test drives) all is well...

Sheesh...

Damn starters...

yah, does anyone know if there is any kind of substance inside the starter that can melt or clog up?? for some reason is seems like there is..... ive heard of a "plunger"....what the hell is that???

anybody:confused:

melt or clog up?
might not have the right concept of a start here goes...

There are generally two can shaped things bolted together.

The larger is the starter itself, a larger electrical motor that has teeth that line up with the flywheel teeth, they are always retracted though.

The smaller "can" is the solenoid - IT IS THE PLUNGER thingy your talking about. It forces the shaft that the gear is on the motor out to line up with the flywheel so that it will start the car, as soon as you let off the with the key, the plunger returns back and so does the gear.

Most common thing I've seen is the solenoid burning up, causing just a "click" to be heard and no start...

cool, my concept of a starter is now crystal clear, thanx chris :D

now switching one out is another story, ive disconnected and unbolted everything, but that starter isnt budgin :(

Ok Guys,

I replace mine about 1 year ago on my G20, but my classic die last night, its auto. Damn I dont remember where the Starter located. Under somewhere next to the tranny I think. What is a good decent one to replace. I've heard some just die a few months later!!!!

yeah its a pain bump starting all the time, especially since my idle/stalling problems have returned. i stalled out facing up a hill the other day. i had to roll backwards to get started again and do it real quick before the car coming up behind me got to close. tomorrow im checking the neg ground and if nothing happens im ordering the a new starter. im sick of this.
