: Wheel paint removal tricky question
StYLez Se-R 02-12-2009, 06:41 PM OK, So I got my hands on a set of stock spec v wheels for my car, the problem is that the guy before me spray painted them black.
They were perfect before he spray painted them, is there any way for me to remove the top layer of black spray paint without damaging the stock wheel finish. I really dont want to resort to Aircraft Remover if at all possible. I just want the stock finish.
It might not be possible but if you guys have any insight thatd be great.
SE-R_TECH 02-12-2009, 07:05 PM i would just paint them grey. if he did it right he scuffed the wheels so even if you got the paint off it would still look bad.

StYLez Se-R 02-12-2009, 08:16 PM I think I might just Aircraft them and possibly polish them.
STRATTON 02-13-2009, 06:08 PM get a scuff pad scuff the surface of the rim. wash it with dish soap (will remove any grease or oil) let it dry.
re-paint.
if you want to strip them though id recommend any spray on paint remover that walmart or a hard ware store etc would carry. be sure to wear good gloves though it burns your skin.
stratton.
ZenkiSR20DET 02-13-2009, 06:32 PM heavy duty brake cleaner should do it thats how i did mine
bluebomber 02-18-2009, 11:27 PM The absolute best stripping agent is the one at home depot in the aresol can. I have to get the name. It is absolutely ridiculous. We use it before we powdercoat anything.
LOUROK 02-19-2009, 04:20 PM I would just spend the extra money and have them sand blasted.
Right now I'm having mine sand blasted and powder coated. I'll post some pics when they are finish.
What ever you end up doing let us know.
n1smojunkie 02-19-2009, 04:25 PM Ha. You want that paint gone, use Aircraft stripper.
StYLez Se-R 02-19-2009, 05:44 PM went at em the aircraft stripper with mediocre results, didnt remove everything but im 100 percent sure its because its only 50 degrees out and it works a TON better in the warmer weather i might just have them sandblasted and then repaint them myself
Taurus45acp 02-19-2009, 05:46 PM i sand blasted my Saab wheels they started out this horrid white and i stripped off all that in about 10 mins per wheel. then powder coated them bronze.
here is a pic that i have, you can see they look okay.

topdog781 02-20-2009, 01:31 AM How much did it cost to powder coat all 4 wheels?

it was 55 per wheel = $220
ronnx 02-20-2009, 02:49 AM with the 55 and if you have a drill already.. get a sanding pad/rust remover, cost like 10$ from autozone. insert it into the drill and in minutes the paint will be off. . get the one that is more flexible. (should be reddish brown in color - the dark grey is way too hard). also buy some 120 or 100 grit sand paper to smooth the surface out. you should be good to go. after each wheel is sanded , clean with water and lil soap let it dry and it's ready to paint. duplicolor wheel paint. silver metallic powder coat and a can of clear coat. 5.99 5.99. get two cans each. this is what i did for a set of b14 wheels. did mine silver metallic (look like stock alloy color) sooo smooth soo beautiful. before i thought of using a drill i sanded all the wheels by hand! my buddy who has a set also they were bronze when he got his, i used my drill cause i finally found the kind of pad i was looking for. save your sand blasted money 55 per wheel use a little palm and elbow grease and 55$ to buy supplies.

I see.
I'm having my wheels sand blasted and coated for $340.00 That includes taking the old tires off, sand blasting, repairing a bent lip on the wheel, and powder coat. Should be done in a week. I'm a bit nervous on how its going to come out.
LOUROK 02-25-2009, 09:50 PM just got them back.
