dude,
cams aren't that hard. the trick with the timing chain is to use some white out and mark off which chain should be on what sprocket gear. also, you can use zip ties to hold them down. although, i would be careful with the zip ties - you usually have to torque the bolt pretty good to undo the cam and the zip tie might not hold on to the gear. i would say the biggest pain in the back is getting the valve cover on and off. good luck!

btw, IIRC smoothdaddyfig has a cam packet for the entire procedure including instructions about keeping the sprockets and timing chain aligned properly.

Hey, don't throw the cams away. I'd take them, but I live in NorCal and I've never done cam install before. If you're going to give your cams away for free + shipping, can I get first dib? Good luck on your S4.

I am a newbie when it comes to mechanics, but I did this install in 2 hours with my friend. It is a two person job I think, I probably couldn't have done it by myself. We put 3 zip ties on each sprocket to ensure nothing would happen. I nearly had a heart attack though when I turned it on and heard CLATTER!!! Sounded like my internals were being ripped apart, but it stopped in two seconds. I heard its normal, as the cam is "settling" or something, right? Its basically just an "unscrew, rescrew" procedure nothing to it. My rear sway bar, now that is another story!

from this piont, i've done all the work myself, header, pulleys, struts, etc. the only concern i have is aquiring that wood tool that everyone uses to wedge to chain. is that a special tool or something. also, how about the distributer? my s4's are just waiting to be installed!

The instructions included with your S4's should contain a template that will allow you to create your own wedge.

If you have the the tools and patience, you should be able to handle this yourself. If I was at home, I'd save you the trouble and foward all the links, but you can find them easily. Do a search in this forum the rest of the Net for "SR20DE cam installation" and you should be able to find quite a bit of helpful information. You may not need the factory manual for this installation, but it has tons of valuable information and now would be a good time to invest in one. If you don't feel comfortable after going through all the available information, and can't find someone to assist, I suggest you pay the $150 and ask to watch the proceedure.

Good Luck,

Get an FSM, get some torque wrenches and get a friend.

Honestly, cams are not that hard. Jay H and Doc Shadoff wrote some GREAT instructions which are on the se-r.net archives. The first time I did cams, I did them by myself with my girlfriend helping me break the cam sprocket bolts loose. Take your time and don't drop anything in the motor. Don't do the wood wedge method, just take out the tensioner. Jay's instructions tells you how to do this.

You can do it, and you will learn alot about your motor and you will gain some mechanical expertise. If you can do a header, you can definitely do cams. They are about the same difficulty level.

Good luck!

To get the wood thing, just make a cutout of it with like a 1'' block of wood. You just shove it down in there, and when you finish pull it out. It was pulling it out that gave me a hard time though, and I cut my hand a little on the chain trying to get it to come out. Don't push it so hard in there you won't be able to get it out, like I did. Lucky for me all that skin that came off on the chain didn't hurt my engine!!! :D :D
