: Starter Squeal

My starter has been squealing when I start the car now for about a year. I took it to the dealer and they said that it was bad. I didn't mess with it though because it still started. Now my car wont' start. It won't even click. I turn the key and nothing happens. I then called around looking for a new starter (assuming that it is dead) and all the places I called asked if it is a Hitachi or Mitsubishi starter. I have no idea. How can you tell without taking it off the car? I can't even find the starter in the cramped engine bay of my 94 SE-R. Any thoughts.

Never looked at one to see the difference but if you get under the car and look under the intake manifold you should find it. The two bolts that hold it help hold the motor and tranny together.

If your starter was squealing, it was most likely the Hitachi unit. But yea, replacing it is cake. I can do it in less than 30 minutes.

If you aren't in a rush, I'll second the Andreas Miko. I got a nice, beautifully functioning start through him, 75 shipped.

thanks for the replies. who is Andreas Miko? and where can I reach him at? I called my local Nissan dealer and they said a starter is $210. Thats pretty ridiculous. The cheapest I've found is a rebuilt one for $125. and they don't know if its a Hitachi or a Mitsubishi. I'm going to take my starter off tommorrow. Doesn't sound to difficult.
