My wife and I want to transfer to Petersburg, VA for school reasons. That, and her parents live only an hour away in Lynchburg. So, we're wondering if there are good places to call home within the city limits of Petersburg. Can you recommend something?

hmm, I live right outside petersburg... Colonial Heights/Chesterfield area. Petersburg isn't known for amazing places to live, as the taxes are some of the highest in the area and isn't exactly bang for your buck. If you have to live in the city limits, look into Walnut Hill, it's a very old neighborhood, with nice properties. However, I recommend something outside the city if you don't have to live within the limits.
