: megan exhaust?
walka 05-12-2009, 11:33 AM Its almost time for me to get a new exhaust. All i've really been able to find is VRS and megan i've heard bad stuff about both. I don't want an exhaust thats super loud its my daily driver. Right now I don't have the tools to make my own custom exhaust and a few mechaincs i've talk to said they wouldn't do it so I was wondering if anyone new any other good sites for a cat-back exhaust?
swiss 05-12-2009, 01:06 PM First of all loud is very subjective. Some people say an exhaust is quiet, and someone else would think that exhaust is too loud. If you’re just going for something like intake, header, and exhaust; you may want to consider an intake and header with the stock exhaust. The stock exhaust really isn’t very restrictive, and you’d only be missing like 3whp. If you want cams and blah blah blah then you’d probably want an exhaust.
What have you heard bad about VRS? I've had two VRS exhausts on two separate cars and both were very well made. It’s going to be noisy, but that really isn’t VRS’s fault. They use nice Magnaflow cans and resonators (you’ll want to pony up for the resonator or it will be even louder). Again, if you really want quiet just sacrifice a little power and keep the stocker.
The Megan is very cheap, and it will be loud no matter how you define loud. They have a really cheap muffler on them.
walka 05-12-2009, 07:03 PM Oh ok then I maybe just go for the VRS. I thought some people on this forum said VRS wasn't as good but maybe is was megan. Then i'll probably get the VRS as long as it won't be attracting cops and won't be annoying on long drives? I just haven't heard a VRS exhaust on a sentra and would like to. I assume the stainless steel would be a better choice and does it really matter if I get the 2.25 , 2.5, or 3 inch pipe?
budgetNX 05-12-2009, 07:46 PM a few mechaincs i've talk to said they wouldn't do it
they wouldnt do it because they cant or because they recomend you leave it stock?
does it really matter if I get the 2.25 , 2.5, or 3 inch pipe?
try searching. there are countless threads out there with plentiful information.
since i had the time to say that, i will say, the size of exhaust pipe you choose should be determined by what you plan on doing with the car in the future. i loved the 2.5 on my NX with my HCR motor with bolt ons and advanced timing
BUUUUUT if i were to buy/build exhaust again, and had plans for going turbo ANYTIME in the future, i would go with 3".
skcusloa 05-12-2009, 08:41 PM I've only heard good things about vrs. I was going to buy my exhaust from them, but then I saw the side exit and decided that was for me. I'm turbo though.
If you get the 3 inch with resonator and you still have a cat I bet it'll be quiet until you open it up.

One mechainc said he it was stupid to put money into ricer cars. He pissed me off. The other one said they like to put there own parts on so they can back up there own work.
AV3N1R 05-12-2009, 10:29 PM VRS ftw, I've got a 3" on my b13(boosted) w/ a gutted cat and no resonator. Its not very loud at all, nice and deep sounding.

They sell some also.
TommyD241 05-13-2009, 12:37 AM VRS or Megan are going to be loud. If quiet is what you want, look for an HKS or Stromung cat-back. Either way, you are going to have to take it to a good muffler shop to get it fitted correctly. The 98+ cats are longer by about an inch or so. You could probably also resolve the issue by buying a cat from a 95-97 SE-R.
walka 05-14-2009, 12:28 AM So I should just buy a HKS or stromung and take it to a muffler shop to get fitted?

Looks similar to the VRS...

I say VRS ftw, honestly searching would answer all your questions. Anybody can tell you what you get, but there not driving it. you are.

I checked that site and the catogory was 95-98 200sx. But the product description says 95-99sentra/200sx with modification. I don't have any tools to do it myself. I was really hoping there would be one that fits directly on but I guess not lol. I'll probably look for a 95-97 cat or look for a muffler shop that would fit is correctly.
swiss 05-14-2009, 03:45 PM I still say if you are only planning intake, header, and exhaust; and you want quiet... consider keeping the stock exhaust. In my opinion 130whp (made up number) and quiet is way better than 135whp (made up number) and obnoxious.
That said, VRS exhausts (I would assume the same for the others) don't normally require anything beyond a ratchet and some wrenches (and some jacks and jackstands of course). Since the 98 cats are a little longer, you may need to trim one pipe. It's only like an inch though, so you may be able to fit it without cutting. If you did need to cut, that section is a slip fit with a clamp on the VRS, so you still wouldn't need any welding.
Also, you couldn't use a 95-97 cat unless you were planning on deleting the rear O2 sensor. They aren't backward compatible.
Here's some info on cats:

Here is how you install a VRS:

TommyD241 05-14-2009, 10:14 PM Oh my bad, some good info there ^^^ about the cat. From what I've read the overkill exhausts have a slip-joint, if you will, on the B-pipe that way you can adjust the length with out any cutting/modifying. However, I had a Magnaflow oval muffler on my car and it was too loud for my taste. I agree with Swiss. If quiet is what you are after I would just stick to the factory exhaust. An exhaust doesn't really free up that much HP on a NA SR20 at all, especially if you don't plan on running at least S3 cams.
PJizzle 05-15-2009, 12:21 AM Where can you buy a vrs exhaust at? I've searched on the web and couldn't find it :(
Usedgoldfish 05-15-2009, 09:36 AM I have headers and intake with stock exhaust and just a lil bigger tip and it looks good and sounds great! Best sounding car I have owned IMO.

I must say I liked the way my car sounded when I just had an intake and a header. The header changed the exhaust note but you could still hear the growl of the intake.
