hi everyone:

I am orig. owner of a '92 classic. I am about to change both emergency brake cables. Seems my left caliper is locking up and the right side wheel just spins with the car jacked up and the e-brake on. I have to manually force the caliper open from below with large pliers.

I noticed when I was under the car or if you just have the drivers rear wheel off a small little cannister with a small hose going into it and a hose coming out which I believe goes to the gas tank. The cannister looks like the old black kodak film cases with the gray cover.

I figured I own the car 17 years, might as well change it. Does anyone know what this part is? does? Is there anything special to know when replacing it? Thanks in advance! regards...

it's a charcoal canister

It catches fuel vapor to reduce emissions.

It's a check valve for the fuel system. It controls the amount of pressure in the tank. There's really no reason to replace it if you aren't having any issues with it. I'm the only person I know to ever replace one, and I only did it when I had fuel issues in my track car. I've never replaced one on any other B13's.

Blair, I think you're correct because the parts guy came out after looking at the microfiche and said it was a check valve. He said it was $44 and the hoses are discontinued. He usually gives me 20% off so again I figured for $35 I'll change it. In addition there was an episode I had at one Gulf station where I could not put gas in the car. The pump would shut off every 20 cents or so. Other cars had no problems so it concerned me. That was last January and I've filled up at other stations perfectly. So now Blair you know of two guys who changed the valve. Thanks much for the info...
