Hey everyone,

I just signed up with speed ventures and I am required to have a snell approved helmet. They say at the end of the year I need at least a 2000 approved helmet, so Im thinking I might as well buy a 2000.

I have no idea how to select a helmet and Im not looking for anything fancy. If anything I wanna spend the most minimal amount of money to reach the required standard set forth by speedventures.

Can anyone help me out?

Get an SA2005 helmet. I don't even think you can find an SA2000 anymore unless it's used. I've been running a Bell M2 for years now, and it's been a quality helmet. They've replaced it with the M4 now, but you can still get M2s (most likely on clearance).

I agree, Bell makes a great Helmet. I had a SA95 Bell untill it expired. It was used a lot and held up great.
If your on a budget check this one out.

If your on a serious budget like me, try to find a used one.
A few years ago I put a post on grassroots motorsports website in the wanted section for a used SA2000 helmet. I ended up with a very nice helmet already set up for a HANS for ~20 bucks. I still use it to this day.
I am sure it will be replaced with a used SA2005 very soon.
Time to start looking!

Snell 2000 will expire at the end of the year for most clubs. Your best bet is to get something with a SA2005 rating.

Fitment is key when selecting a helmet. A helmet that doesn't fit well won't work well when you need it. And every helmet, even within a brand, fits differently. For example, Bell's motorsport helmets tend to fit well for people with round heads (from the top down). They fit me well, but they don't fit some of my friends at all. Similar story with all of the common brands around here (HJC, Simpson, Impact Racing, Pyrotect, etc).

If you can't try before you buy, I'd take a look at GForce helmets. They use a soft padding construction that seems to have a wider range of fit than most other brands. They're bigger and heavier than most, but they will do the job.

Word! G-force and Simpson helmets tend to smash my cheeks up. Bell fits my round noggin the best.

Which reminds me, don't buy a helmet over the Internet that you haven't personally tried on before. Make sure it fits snug, you shouldn't be able to move it more than an inch with your hands independently from your head. Also, keep in mind that it'll loosen up a little with use, so get one that's snugger rather than looser.
