: Was I just lucky?

Tonight I sucked water into my engine from f&%king T.S Eduard. So I took out the plugs, and it seemed that all the water was sitting on top of the pistons, and woulnd't start bc of it. Well thinking that either it was fucked or the water was indeed sitting on top I cranked the engine spitting out almost all the water that was in there which was quite a bit, we then preceeded to put the plugs back in once the water stoped spitting out and with luck the car started with white smoke pouring out the exhaust but then the smoke disappeared. The Check Engine light never came on, after running the car and driving it the 2 miles back to my place, and it seemed to be running completely fine (I couldn't get to my ECU tonight gonna check tomorrow to see if any codes are spitting out ** I take it in). I am gonna take it to get the Engine Check just to make sure tomorrow, but does it sound like I got really lucky?

As long as all the water, and i mean all of it, was in the combustion chamber on top the piston, your completely fine. Your not going to hurt anything. Just turn 'er over and watch the water fly!!! i love doing this(when i have extra time to spare when i need engine TDC). your lucky though to not have had combustion occur while the water was in the cylinder-must have timed it just right. if that were to happen, good-bye engine. water does not compress. therefore something has to give.

Well it seems that lady luck was on my side.. everything checked out fine, no ecu codes, no check engine light. I am so relieved, just did a full engine service on it and think I am gonna change the oil again in like 500 miles.

I'd be investing in one of those AEM bypass valves.

Can't get much luckier than that!!!

i dont have experience with the bypass valve but i doubt they work(under real life circumstances). A magazine did a test on an NSX where and extended tube was attached to the intake tube and the filter was then FULLY submerged under water.

First off, whos car has an 8 foot tube extending up a couple feet then about 6 feet extending down? The test showed the water being sucked up the tube fairly high. Now, my cars intake tube sits parallel to the ground(just like everyone elses), therefore, gravity isnt working against the water like how it did on the test.

second, during the test, the filter was fully submerged into a tank of water. fully submerging it into water would create a high pressure vacuum in the intake tube, forcing the bypass valve to open. So what would happen if only a small amount of water is sucked into the tube? a slight pressure increase maybe, probably enough to suck the water into the engine, but probably not enough to open the valve. If the valve was able to handle the air flow requirements on the NSX, then obviously it would need a significant pressure increase for the valve to open.
